A Cased Pair of William Powell & Sons Saw Handled Percussion Target Pistols (converted from flintlock to percussion) with silver furniture. The guns were originally flintlocks and the silver work from Matthew Boulton's Soho works shows a date stamp for 1799. The percussion conversion is signed by Williams and Powell, however the original manufacturer of the guns is understood to be Jeremiah Patrick of Pool Lane Liverpool. It is believed the conversion to percussion and the fitting to a new box took place around 1834/4. Sadly the records of Williams & Powell were destroyed by bombing during the war thus further research has proved difficult. The family coat of arms on the pistols points to the Gosling family of London. Richard Gosling, a silversmith was in business at 55 Cornhill until 1774, close to Fleet Street. His relationship to Sir Francis is uncertain. Joseph Gosling was both son and business partner to Richard Gosling his occupation was described as a Goldsmith and Clockmaker from 1775 to 1790 also at 55 Cornhill. It would appear that the Joseph Gosling for whom these guns were originally manufactured may have been the first born son of Joseph Gosling Snr. Provenance: The owner of this collection excavated Hailes Abbey in Winchcombe over many seasons, and during his years with English Heritage, was largely responsible for developing the collection of historic artillery now on display at Pendennis Castle in Cornwall.
