Peregrine Bertie (1709-1779) of Lincoln’s Inn was an active barrister and a member of an ancient east midland family, and Mundy had been at Lincoln’s Inn under his tutelage as a young man in the 1760s. Bertie had married Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Payne of Tottenham Wick, Wilts. and their son, Albemarle Bertie later (in 1809) succeeded a cousin as 9th Earl of Lindsey.
