Lot 104

Ivory Folding Rule, Wood Late Abraham, English, c.1850, engraved 'WOOD LATE ABRAHAM LIVERPOOL' and with owners name 'J F Ramsbotham' delicatly constructed of ivory with german silver fittings, engraved both sides with inches and scalings to the bevelled edges, 60cm fully extended. [CITES] Note: John Ramsbottom (b. 11 September 1814 – d. 20 May 1897) was an English mechanical engineer. he was born in Todmorden, then on the county border of Yorkshire and Lancashire. Ramsbottom was the son of a steam cotton mill owner. here he learned about steam engines, rebuilding his father's and also invented the weft fork (this has also been attributed to James Bullough) that enabled looms to be run at high speed. He also created many inventions for railways but his main legacy is the split metal piston ring, which he invented and later perfected. Virtually all reciprocating engines continue to use these today. Ramsbotham became a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1866. The Dental Mirror of Sir Frederick Seymour, English, c.1882-1895, in silver with engine turned decoration, concave mirror with folding handle that can also be angled, back engraved with the Seymour crest over which is the coronet of the first and last Baron Alcester – Admiral Sir Frederick Beauchamp Paget Seymour, 10.8cm with handle opened out. Note: Admiral Sir Frederick Seymour was the only surviving son of Sir Horace Beauchamp Seymour and grandson of Admiral Lord Hugh Seymour, the 5th son of the 1st Marquess of Hertford. Sir Frederick was created Baron Alcester, of Alcester, Co. Warwick on the 24th November 1882. His peerage fell into extinction on his death on the 30th March 1895.

A Sculptural Gibeon Iron Meteorite, The naturally formed triangular body with thumb-sized shallow concavities extending across the whole shaped by both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial forces. The surface with a burnished silver-gunmetal patina with bright accents to the edges grace this remarkable meteorite. Chemistry – 90%Iron, 8% Nickel, 0.4% Cobolt, 0.04% Phosphorous, Group IVA, fine octahedriteGibeon, Location: Great Nama Land, Namibia (25°23' S, 17°47' E). The crystal structure of this meteorite provides a classic example of fine octahedrite and the Widmanstätten pattern is appreciated for its beauty both by collectors and designers of jewelry. Dimensions: 10.2cm x 7cm x 5.4cm, weight 1.038kg Footnote: The Gibeon meteorite was discovered by the Nama people and used by them to make tools and weapons.In 1836 the English captain J. E. Alexander collected samples of the meteorite in the vicinity of the Fish River and sent them to London. There John Herschel analyzed them and confirmed for the first time the extra-terrestrial nature of the material.

It is in effect a urethral dilator designed to stretch and release a stricture or narrowing of the urethra. A BLACK-LACQUER SUZURIBAKO (BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS) AND COVERTaisho (1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era, early 20th centuryOf standard rectangular form with a kabusebuta (overlapping lid), embellished in various shades of gold and red togidashi maki-e with overlapping stalks of hageito (Joseph's coat) on a lustrous black ground, with highlights of e-nashiji, the design continuing over the lid and over the front side of the box, the interior of plain black-lacquer, with a removable ita (baseboard) containing the suzuri (ink-grinding stone), a silvered-metal oval suiteki (water dropper), one nashiji-lacquered brush and one inkstick holder with engraved silver fittings and gold-lacquered with maple leaves, unsigned; with a wood storage box. 5cm x 26cm x 22.5cm (2in x 10¼in x 8 7/8in).
