A SPANISH GOLD AND SILVER DAMESCENED IRON PAPERKNIFE, EIBAR, DATED 1875the chamfered spearpoint blade with decorated ricasso, on one side inscribed F FRONCOSO Á SU AMIGO J COOPER AÑO DE 1875, the hilt with crossguard and octagonal quillons, langets, slender grip and domed pommel with button, sheath, 26cm l (2)Dating from early in the great revival of the craft of damescening in Spain by Eusebio and Placido Zuloaga, the present dagger is modelled on a hunting knife (itself derived from the plug bayonet). This example was made in a Eibar workshop or, perhaps at the National Arms factory by a follower of the Zuloagas, several of whom resettled in Toledo in the later 1870s. HMS Cyclops- a silver presentation cigarette box by Goldsmith & Silversmith Co, the engine turned case with inscription to interior `Lieutenant L. A. Taylor, Royal Navy with best wishes from the officers of HMS Cyclops and the 1st Submarine Flotilla 1924`, 20cm wide.
A George III Irish silver oval sauce boat by Matthew West, Dublin 1788, with a leaf-capped double scroll handle, embossed overall with foliate sprays, engraved with a crest and on three shell and stepped pad feet, 16.6cm (6 1/2in) long, 153g (4.95 oz); and a George III Irish Old English pattern hook-end sauce ladle, maker’s mark indistinct, possibly ‘I.C’ for John Craig, Dublin 1773, engraved with a crest and a foliate swag and a shell shaped bowl, 19.5cm (7 3/4in) long, 53g (1.7 oz). The first crest of a demi-lion rampant recorded for ATHY, BRUSH, CADAN, DEJEAN, EAMES, FONTE, GRADAN, HARE and 34 other families. The second of an older man’s head is the crest of MULLINS of Burnham, co. Kerry and of MORRIS.
A George III Irish silver cream jug by William Townsend, Dublin no date letter, late 18th century, with a high clip handle, engraved with a foliate and zigzag bands, crests to the two roundels, 14cm (5 1/2in) high, 169g (5.45 oz). Venus posing on a crest for ELLIS in a Dublin register dated 1816, and the addition of a pair of wings was generally the first step in differencing a crest for another branch of the family.
A pair of George I Irish cast silver octagonal candlesticks, maker’s mark ‘. W’, Dublin 1723, with knopped, faceted and tapering columns and diamond facets to base, marked in base wells and additionally with the crowned harp to the capitals, each engraved under the bases with scratch-weights 10=8 and 10=10, 16cm (6 1/4in) high, 655g (20.75 oz). The maker’s marks are indistinct but maybe for Joseph Walker.
A George IV Irish silver fiddle pattern with rat-tail gravy spoon by Edward Power, Dublin 1828, retailed by John Twycross, engraved with a crest, 32cm (12 1/2in) long, 130g (4.2 oz). The crest recorded in Dublin 1816 for MANDERS, VICKERS, WALKER, RIBTON, HOFFMAN, FITZSIMMONS, BOURSEQUOT, ROSBOROUGH, HARKNESS, PHAIRE, GOULBORN, SHARMAN, CRAWFORD, FITZSIMON, SHEARMAN, NOWLAN, CHURCH and IRELAND.
A George III Scottish silver twin handled trophy cup by George McHattie, Edinburgh 1808, retailer’s mark ‘Milroy’ to foot rim, the tongue-capped angular handles issuing from leaves, the cylindrical body on a circular spreading foot with a threaded rim, the interior gilt, 22cm (8 1/2in) high, 716g (23 oz), on a later black plastic socle as a backgammon prize. The plaque to the socle engraved ‘Second Prize Clermont Club Backgammon Tournament October 1966’. This was won by the present vendor’s step-father, John Miller, when he was a member of the Clermont Club in the 1960s and backgammon player extraordinaire. The Clermont Set was an exclusive group of rich British gamblers who met at 44 Berkeley Square, in London’s fashionable Mayfair district now located at 27-28 Curzon Street and called Aspinall’s. The club was founded in 1962 by John Aspinall and the original membership included five dukes, five marquesses, almost twenty earls and two cabinet ministers. Society figures included Peter Sellers, Ian Fleming, David Stirling, Lucian Freud, ‘Lucky’ Lord Lucan, Lord Derby, Lord Boothby, and the Duke of Devonshire. Businessman members included James Goldsmith, Gianni Agnelli, Jim Slater, and Kerry Packer.
An early George III English provincial silver straight-tapered tankard by John Langlands I, Newcastle 1769, the stepped domed cover with a scroll thumb piece, the S-scroll handle with a heart shaped terminal, a moulded girdle and on a spreading base, 18cm (7 1/4in), 689g (22.15 oz)
A set of thirteen Victorian silver fiddle and thread pattern table forks by Emanuel Brothers (Harry Emanuel), London 1858, engraved with a crest, 20cm (7 3/4in) long, 1192g (38.3 oz). The crest recorded in 1905 for AGAR, BOND, CARD, DYES, EWAN, FURY, GOLD, HARA, INGLIS, JOY, KEDMARSTON, LYNN, MARCH, NICOL, ORPEN, PIGG, ROCK, SCOT, TOT, VAMPAGE, WILCOCKS, YATES and some 400 other names.
