'THE MAN WHO WAS SINN FEIN' O'Caoimh (Padraig or Paudie) 1881-1973. A superb and important display of his 1916 and War of Independence Medals, attractively mounted and framed with his Irish Volunteer uniform buttons and cap badge, and his 1916 Survivor's Armband (worn at commemorative parade 1935), and with a good original photograph. The Collection here offered include: a. His 1916 bronze Medal with ribbon and pin; b. His War of Independence bronze Medal (1917-1921), with scarce 'Comrac' bar; c. His 1916-1966 silver gilt Survivors Medal, bar and ribbon; d. His 1921-1971 bronze Jubilee Medal with clasp and ribbon. With three Volunteer buttons, his Volunteer Cap Badge, and his rare 1916 - 1935 Survivors Armband (worn by 1916 veterans only, before the issue of the medals). Paudie O'Keeffe was a close friend and associate of Arthur Griffith from the early days of Sinn Fein, and also a very good friend of his fellow Corkman Michael Collins. Born in Co. Cork, he worked as a post office sorter and joined the I.R.B. there. About 1901 he was transferred to the G.P.O. in Dublin, & in 1908 he became joint-honorary Treasurer of Sinn Fein. He married Cait de Paor, one of the Wyse Power family in 1910, her brother John Wyse Power was a founder member of the G.A.A. Paudie was also in the Banba Rifle Club (1912-13), whose members practised shooting in the Greenmount Oil Works in Harold's Cross (owned by the Le Brocquy family); others members included Cathal Brugha, Sean Mac Diarmada, and Eamonn Ceant; Brugha was the best shot according to Paudie. In 1914 Paudie had a major part in the Kilcoole arms landings for the Volunteers. In April 1916 he was closely involved with Griffith and Eoin Mac Neill in the exchanges over plans for Easter Sunday. At one stage Mac Neill sent him to ask at the Sunday Independent office what was the latest time a notice (of cancellation) could be accepted. Nevertheless when the Rising went ahead on Easter Monday, Paudie showed up with his rifle, leaving his wife and three children, and served in one of the O'Connell Street garrisons, opposite the G.P.O. holding out until the building collapsed around him. He was imprisoned after the Rising, and on his release was appointed full-time General Secretary of Sinn Fein. He played a major part in building up the party organisation; it has been said that 'Paudie O'Keefe was Sinn Fein.' British Army raids on his office made no difference, because Paudie kept every detail in his head. He had a notable turn of phrase; around this time a visiting British journalist (Sir Arthur Gibbs), asked him what was the meaning of these strange words 'Sinn Fein'; the answer he gave was 'Vengeance, bejasus, vengeance.' Paudie was elected a member of the First Dail and was imprisoned again for a seditious speech; he supported the Treaty, and after Independence was appointed deputy governor of Mountjoy Jail. It is said that he found the job distasteful, and in the 1920's he moved to the Seanad as assistant Clerk. Many years later as one of the four surviving members of the First Dail, he was asked for his memories of the Civil War. 'Ah,' he said 'when they shot Liam Mellows that broke my heart,' (cf. Seamus O'Neill, 'The Man who was Sinn Fein,' Irish Press 27.9.1973). A superb collection, attractively mounted and preserved, commemorating one of the central and best-loved figures of the Independent Movement, before and after 1916. (1)

Lot 42

- Totally original and unrestored - One of only 21 made in 1930 - Still retaining the original sidecar with which it left the factory. - Built to special order and factory build record supplied with the machine. The Brough Motorcycle marque will be forever associated with T.E. Lawrence, known as 'Lawrence of Arabia' who bought one of the first SS100s in 1925 having previously owned three Brough SS80s. The crash that would end his life came while riding another SS100, on a narrow road near his cottage in 1935. SS100 motorcycles with JAP engines were advertised by Brough as the 'Rolls Royce of Motorcycles'. All bikes had a guarantee that they were capable of 100 mph (160 km/h). The current world record for a Brough Superior SS100 is £315,000. George Beale, Director of H&H Classic Motorcycles, says: "The fact that this magnificent motorcycle is unrestored only adds to its attractiveness for specialist collectors who might decide to restore or, indeed leave it in its present good condition much as it left the factory 86 years ago. It has been owned by just four previous owners, the last, the current vendor, Frank Solano has loved and used it on many rallies for the past 26 years." A total of 283 SS 100 models were produced from 1925 to 1934 and only 131 are known to have survived. Only 21 SS100 models were produced in 1930 and it is possible that this is the only motorcycle to have actually left the works with a sidecar fitted .The build card indicates that this machine was made to order and lists all the non standard items which were to be fitted. The Brough, Registration number TV 2003 has a Bentley and Draper spring type frame, number S 1017 with a J.A.P overhead valve 'V' twin 994cc engine - number JTO/W 91700 /SC. The bike is fitted with a 4-speed gearbox rather than the standard 3-speed item. According to the Brough Club the gearbox number indicates that this would have been fitted in 1933 and more than likely at the Brough factory.Normally sidecars were fitted to the SS80 models which used a more sedate side valve engine rather than the sportier SS 100 overhead valve model. The sidecar is a Cruiser model fitted with a special sprung frame which was introduced in 1928. The earlier rigid frame ones caused handling problems when fitted to the Bentley and Draper framed machines. Owner, Frank Solano, says: "I have owned TV2003 for a very long time and have travelled many mile with this bike to Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Norway, Sweden and Portugal on very many Brough rallies as well as all the annual rallies of the Brough club. As President of the club for a short while I was very active with this bike. I cannot recall how many miles I have done on the bike but I do remember all the enjoyment my wife Luise and I have had with it, as well as my grandson Derek. I liked the bike to the point of having a solid silver model created so I will very never forget her." Most of the ownership history of the motorcycle and sidecar is known. It left the factory on April 14th 1930 and was purchased by Mr H. J. Davies. It was then returned to the factory and re-sold to Mr H. Walker on 24th January 1931. Then there is a gap in its history until it was bought by Mr B. Clarke in 1979. It then went to Mr John Deacon in 1985 and the present owner acquired it in August 1990. It is in good original running condition and has never been restored. The original build card, which is held by the Brough Club (a copy of which will be supplied with the bike), shows in bold type the changes that were made when it was returned to the factory before being sold to Mr Walker. These included the fitting of a twistgrip throttle control to replace the lever type.

Lot 59

- Originally supplied to Charlie Freeman Motors of Essington Derbyshire in May 1961 - The chassis number is not clearly visible but may be from a 350 machine, of course 500 and 350 frames are exactly the same - Originally restored 25 years ago - Ridden at Brands Hatch in 1990 by Mike Colin, then Vice Chairman of the Classic Racing Motorcycle Club - He also rode the bike in the Isle of Man in 1991 and won a silver replica - Reputed to be looked after by Ray Petty for both John Cooper and Derek Minter - The cylinder head is a Ray Petty twin spark modification and is stamped 'Derek' - Now fitted with a single spark magneto but the Bosch twin spark one stamped 'John Cooper' is supplied with the bike - An invoice from George Beale Motorcycles in 2007 shows that the original 19" rims have been fitted along with new 'triangular' tyres and tubes - At the same time the cylinder head was re-conditioned, engine overhauled and checked all was OK - The bike has been stored in a heated private museum since then
