Peter Barrett (B. 1935) "Sporting Horses - Thoroughbred" Signed lower left. Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29? Thoroughbred Racing stamp issued May 1, 1993. "The sport of kings," horse racing slowly evolved from a leisure time activity into a massive public entertainment business. The first organized race in North America was credited to Richard Nicolls, governor of the colony of New York. In 1665, he offered a silver cup to the winner of a course race at Hampstead Plain, Long Island, thus introducing the first racing trophy to this continent. Many of the rules and customs of today's races were developed in Britain in the 1840s by Lord George Cavendish-Bentinck. Starting the contest with a flag, parading horses in the paddock before the race and the number-board displaying each horse and rider are all among his contributions. In the U.S., three of the most famous races comprise the Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. Since 1875, Churchill Downs, in Louisville, Kentucky, has held the prestigious Kentucky Derby which is patterned after the English Derby at Epsom Downs. The second challenging event is the Preakness, run at the venerable Pimlico race track in Baltimore, Maryland. Inaugurated in 1873, this race covers a stretch of almost one-and-one-quarter miles. The final leg of the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes, known as "The Test of the Champion." Run in Belmont Park on Long Island, New York, this race dates back to 1867, making it the oldest of the trio. Just a select few of the nation's finest Thoroughbreds have won all three contests to become Triple Crown champions. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 17 in. Unframed. (B14208)

Harry Schaare (American, 1922 - 2008) "Indians Scouting Army" Signed lower right. Oil on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "The Final Conflict" published in 1983. Primeval forces that shaped America's river valleys and mountain passes dictated the direction of the pioneers' Trails West. Thus, it was not the surveyor, but the easiest natural route, that led the white man across the North American continent. It was the early settlers' journey West in search of gold, silver, new land and a promise of a better life that led to a conflict of cultures. Thus began the inevitable and tragic confrontation between the white man and the native son of the western wilderness ... the Indian. Indians often watched cautiously from a distance as the Cavalry, destined to be the red man's worst enemy, moved westward. Since Indians were considered ruthless savages by the white man, there was never an objection to displacing them. Consequently, in the years that followed, frequent battles led to the deaths of thousands of white men and Indians. Then in 1868, weary of war, the U.S. government sought to make peace with the Indians. Under billowing tent folds at Ft. Laramie, Wyoming, Indian warriors and military leaders gathered to talk ... and agreed to bring an end to war. Now confined in their own land by military forces, Indians turned inward, to new spiritual beliefs, in the hope of regaining their land and their freedom. It was a young Paiute prophet, Wovoka, who fostered the Ghost Dance ritual ... a spiritual rite that contributed to the last and most tragic conflict between Indian and white man which occurred on December 29, 1890, at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Image Size: 17.75 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 17.75 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B07358)

Exhibited 19th Century Russian Icon Depicting Florus, Laurus and selected Saints. Tempera on silver-leaf on wood. The Archangel Michael stands at center and holds the "Not Made by Hands" image of Christ on a cloth. He is flanked by two bishops and by Saints Florus and Laurus. Florus and Laurus were stonemason brothers who were martyred in the 2nd century by being thrown into a well that was then filled with earth. In Orthodoxy, the brothers were the patron saints of stonemasons. They also became closely associated with the care and raising of horses and were popular as the patron saints of horse herding. They are commemorated on August 18th, a date that became commonly known as the Horse Festival. Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "The Stars and Stripes - 38 Star Flag" Signed lower right. Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33? 38-Star Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. When gold was discovered near Denver in 1858, mining towns flourished as thousands of immigrants settled in the region. By 1861, Congress had established the Colorado Territory with its boundaries essentially those of the presentday state. Colorado's early territorial days were marked by intense Indian wars, particularly with the Cheyenne, Arapaho and Ute tribes. Eventually, the Cheyenne and Arapaho ceded all lands east of the mountains and agreed to leave the area. The western slope, however, remained under control of the Ute. When silver was discovered in the San Juan Mountains, miners and settlers rushed to the area and the Ute fought desperately for their lands. An 1868 treaty recognized the rights of the Ute, but by 1873 the tribe had abandoned the metal-rich region. The territory's population continued to increase with the construction of railroads. Colorado became America's 38th state on August 1, 1876, and in 1877 Congress approved a 38-star flag. Prior to 1912, when rows of stars became standard, the stars on the American flag could be arranged in a variety of patterns. The 38-star flag displays the stars in a double circle with a star in each comer and a larger star in the center, representing the new state of Colorado. Image Size: 14 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 18 x 14 in. Unframed. (B16841)

Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "Distinguished Soldiers" Signed lower left. Acrylic on Illustration Board. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33? Distinguished Soldiers Se-tenant Block of 4 stamps issued May 3, 2000. The first award of honor for the common soldier, rather than for high-ranking military elites, was given in the United States. In 1780, three "Andr?" medals were awarded to militiamen John Paulding, Isaac van Wart and David Williams for capturing British intelligence officer Major John Andr? who was carrying dispatches from General Benedict Arnold that betrayed the American cause. On July 12, 1862, Congress authorized the Medal of Honor -- the nation's highest military award -- to be presented to Army noncommissioned officers and privates who "distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action." Since the nation's founding, many American soldiers have distinguished themselves in the service of their country. Four of America's most notable heroes are Alvin C. York, John L. Hines, Audie L. Murphy and Omar N. Bradley. Alvin York was awarded the Medal of Honor for saving his patrol during the Meuse-Argonne offensive of World War I. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star, John Hines was the only American officer in World War I to command successively in battle a regiment, brigade, division and corps. The most decorated American soldier of World War II, Audie Murphy defended his unit in eastern France by single-handedly holding off six German tanks and over 200 enemy soldiers. During World War II, Omar Bradley was in charge of more than 1,300,000 men -- the largest American field command in U.S. history. In 1950, Bradley was promoted to the five-star rank of General of the Army. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.75 x 18.25 in. Unframed. (B16693)
