Four Tibetan turned wood tea Bowls, 20th century, each paktong or silver coloured mounted, 12cm diameter and smaller (5) While often used for buttered tea, originally these bowls were carried by Monks who had no personal possessions. Every day they would go out into the local community to collect food and alms upon which they depended for their existence. Found in Tibet, Ladakh and Bhutan these tea bowls also doubled as food bowls and the staple diet of Tibet, roasted barley flour or tsampa, was mixed with tea and rolled by hand into small balls inside such bowls. Compare with similar examples displayed in the Oriental Museum, Durham. This lot is to be sold without reserve
