Colonel W. E. BLEWITT C.M.G. R.A.Major General William Edward Blewitt (1854 - 1939) was born in Pinner and was educated at Harrow. He was commissioned at the R.A. on 12th February 1874 - promoted Captain 1st Aug. 1883, Major 14th March 1891 and Lt. Colonel 13th February 1900. He served in the Second Boer War where he was mentioned twice in General White's despatches on 2nd December 1899 and 23rd March 1900. During the War he was wounded and invalidid to England. He was awarded the C.B. in 1908, C.M.G. in 1900 and C.B.E. in 1919. He was secretary of the Ordnance Committee, Commandant of the School of Gunnery for Horse Artillery, Director of Artillery at the War Office, General Officer Commanding South Coastal Defence (1911 - 1914) and Portsmouth Garrison (1914 - 1916)
