The Virgin of the Rosary, according to Marian tradition dictates, this Holy Image of the Mother of God of the Rosary was introduced into Spain in the 13th century by Saint Dominic de Guzmán, to whom the Virgin Mary herself would have taught to pray it However, there are no images of this composition before the 15th century. In 1571 Spain won the battle of Lepanto against the Turks, a victory for Christianity that was attributed to the Mother of God, who would have granted it because all of Spain prayed the rosary for this cause. Dominican friars brought the cult to the Spanish colonies in the New World. This invocation of Mary, which was widely reproduced in images to wear during the viceregal era, became the patron saint of Guatemala and of those who traveled by sea for commercial purposes. In the foreground, we see the Crowned Mother of God, next to the Child Jesus resting in her arms. Under her mantle, the Silver Crescent and the coat of arms of the Dominican Order.
