A marriage in 1743 of John SQUIRE and Jane DAVIES was held at Stoughton, Sussex and may be relevant. The second armorial: The distinctive paternal (dexter) arms are for the GOLDFRAP family, however the family name is incorrectly listed in Burke's General Armory as GOLDTRAP and that error is subsequently transferred to later heraldic indexes. The name confirmed as GOLDFRAP by reference to the College of Arms indexes and parish register entries, the motto of the arms offering further confirmation. There is very little genealogical information about the family, other than that the grant of arms was made in 1749 to James GOLDFRAP merchant of Dover, Kent, son of James GOLDFRAP glover formerly of Worcester. The grantee married in 1747 at Dover Mary RAWLINGS and it is expected that a descendant of their surviving son John George GOLDFRAP (born 1751 Dover) was the owner of the arms as seen. The less distinctive maternal (sinister) arms are likely to be of the SQUIRE family of London. No marriages have been found link the family names here. Crest: a lions jambe between two wings elevated or holding a baton of the last (Goldfrap). Motto: FRAPPEZ AVEC RAISON (Goldfrap).Condition Report: Maker's mark beneath crisp, standard and town marks by handle top rubbed, cover unmarked, hinge tight, cover sits well, scratches and nicks commensurate with age and use, pinprick dent near spout, sits well, engraving goodCondition Report Disclaimer

A GEORGE II SILVER BALUSTER BEER JUG THOMAS FARREN, LONDON 1742 With a leaf-capped S-scroll handle, a spout resting on scrolls, on a short moulded circular foot, engraved with an armorial 20.5cm (8in) high 920g (29.55 oz)Provenance: sale Sotheby's 6th March 1997, lot 187 (£4600 hammer). The arms are immediately identified as belonging to the CAMPBELL family. The quarterings suggest that the arms are likely to be associated with the Duke of Argyll or one of their many cadet branches that include the CAMPBELL family, Baronets of Carrickboy in Ireland. At the time of assay (1742), John CAMPBELL (1680-1743) was 2nd Duke of Argyll and he married firstly Mary BROWN (died 1717) and secondly Jane WARBURTON (died 1767), daughter of Thomas WARBURTON and Anne WILLIAMS, sister of WARBURTON and maid of honour to Queen Anne; Jane was buried with the 2nd Duke in Westminster Abbey. I suspect that Jane CAMPBELL née WARBURTON was the owner of your item, which came in to use after the death of the 2nd Duke. The engraving being correctly applied during her dowry but without acknowledging her paternal arms. The 2nd Duke had issue: three daughters but no sons and was succeeded by his younger brother Archibald CAMPBELL (1682-1761) 3rd Duke. There is also the possibility that the jug was intended for the use of the 2nd Duke and his wife Anne WHITFIELD. However, despite such an inauspicious beginning, he had a successful political career, and was to become a major landholder. In 1807, Sarah, the future 3rd Marchioness Townshend (d. 1858), née Dunn-Gardner, only surviving daughter and heiress of William Dunn-Gardner of Chatteris House, Cambridgeshire, had married George Ferrars Townshend, Earl of Leicester, later 3rd Marquess Townshend (1778-1855) of Raynham Hall, Norfolk. A year later, she left the marital home accusing her husband of being impotent and having had a homosexual relationship with his Italian secretary. In an attempt to have the marriage dissolved, Sarah unsuccessfully sued for an annulment in the ecclesiastical courts. In 1809, she eloped to Gretna Green with John Margetts, a St. Ives brewer, who she bigamously married. Lord Leicester was disinherited by his father, the 2nd Marquess, for bringing shame on the family name, and moved abroad - although the disinheritance would not affect the descent of the peerage. Sarah went on to have several illegitimate children with Margetts, all of whom in the early years bore the Margetts name; John (eventually Dunn-Gardner) was the eldest son. In 1823, as Sarah's legal marriage had never been annulled, and by law, the children she had borne Margetts were considered the issue of Lord Townshend and thus could inherit the estates and titles, she had her children baptised with the surname Townshend. John (Dunn-Gardner) became 'John Townshend', and inherited the courtesy title Earl of Leicester. In 1841, he became Member of Parliament for Bodmin. In 1842, Lord Charles Townshend (1785-1853), George Ferrars' brother, and heir if there were no legitimate sons, petitioned Parliament to have Sarah's children de-legitimised, and in 1843, they were all declared illegitimate by a private Act of Parliament. 'John Townshend' took his mother's maiden name and became John Dunn-Gardner.  In 1859, John Dunn Gardner became High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, and was one of the largest landowners in Cambridgeshire. He was known for his magnificent collection of important early English silver and objects of art, which he had loaned on exhibition to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. This collection was dispersed at Christie's on 29th April 1902, with The New York Times reporting on 4th May 1902: 'The sensational prices realised at the auctions of art objects, books, pictures, furniture and old silver in London this week easily eclipsed all records. The dispersal of the celebrated Dunn-Gardner Collection of old silver attracted buyers from all parts'.  See sale Sotheby's 27th April 2010, lot 282 for a conforming pair of 1819.Condition Report: Light scratches and wear commensurate with age and light use.
