The Galgebakke figure is identified as female on the basis of the elaborate crested hairstyle, and an ankle-length dress with tiny feet beneath. The interpretation usually offered for this figure is that of a skjoldmø or 'shield-maiden', a female who takes up arms in pursuit of vengeance such as the legendary Hervor in Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks. Scholars used to interpret these armed females as valkyries - hand maidens of the god Oðinn - but the idea has been challenged recently (Garde?a, 2013).

It was concentrated on the figure of Sol Invictus, the sun god, who was often represented driving a quadriga. This cult came from the Near East but spread into the Roman Empire with imperial patronage; symbolism like this was part of the cult of Mithras that was found throughout the empire from Britain (a temple to Mithras can still be seen in the modern City of London) to its eastern coasts in the ancient colonies of Thracia and Dacia, Moesia, Pannonia and Dalmatia. The rest of the plaque shows worshippers (probably the donors of the votive plaque) who are preparing the offering meal, while the riders on horseback, the divine twins Castor and Pollux, evoke the cult of the Danubian rider. Their sister Helen of Troy stands at an altar of Sol like a priestess, representing fertility. As suggested by Aimone, the presence of the two horsemen seems suggest a military context, a connection underlined by the presence of the fully armoured soldier at the left. This iconography was very popular in the Roman Empire and lasted until the 4th century A.D., being also the subject of other artworks, like the fabulous tray in the recently published Wyvern collection (Aimone, 2020, pp.95ff.). The depiction of Victoria as Lady Una, calmly directing the enormous beast by her side, the Lion (representing England), was a clever analogy, using the characters from Edmund Spenser's poem The Faerie Queene (written in 1590). It was the first time in history a British monarch was depicted on a coin as a fictional character.As part of the Great Engravers series the coin offered here has caused equal amounts of admiration and frustration due to the low mintage and low-profile marketing from the Royal Mint. The mintage being just 225 pieces, it was immediately sold out and shortly thereafter coins were selling for multiples of the issue price on the secondary market. The Una and the Lion design is perhaps the most iconic of all British coin designs. The original 5 Pound piece struck for Queen Victoria in 1839 has been one of the best performers of all British investment coins but its performance now eclipsed by its modern version, leaving most collectors with little chance of ever getting one. The issues the mint encountered with the Jubilee coins are well documented and were exacerbated by the pressure for the coins to be ready for the Queen's Golden Jubilee on 20 June 1887. Records show that 1,771,425 half-sovereigns were struck in 1887, but only 871,770, less than 50% of the total, were fit for circulation. To improve metal flow silver was included in the alloy, which makes all 1887 London Jubilee head half-sovereigns stand out for their lighter colour. AN EDWARDIAN SILVER CIGARETTE CASE, GIFTED BY KING GEORGE V TO A.V. MARTEN WILLIAM NEALE, CHESTER 1907 Inscribed to the interior 'FROM HIS MAJESTY TO A.V. MARTEN, XMAS 1910' 8.5cm x 9cm 130.8g (4.21 oz) gross Alfred Vigor Marten (1879-1956) served as a Royal Seaman between 1899-1919, and served on HMS King George V. HMS King George V was the lead ship of its class and often serving as a flagship for the Home and Grand Fleets, including participating in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. In the 1922 Birthday Honours, Mr Marten was awarded the Member of the Royal Victorian Order, 5th Class. He is also recorded as working as Clerk to the Keeper of His Majesty's Privy Purse, and in the 1946 New Year's Honours List he was awarded a CBE for his service.
