JMW Silver: 'Sketches of Japanese Manners and Customs', London, Day and Son, 1867, 1st edition, chromolithograph title page and 27 chromolithograph plates complete as list (including the bathing plate), [viii],51pp, tipped in errata slip, 4to, original brick coloured pictorial cloth gilt, front cover with some water staining and edge wear, boards loose, backstrip complete but part detached, internally leaves loose as Victorian gutta percha glue perished (as usual), but all leaves complete and plates generally very clean/VGC, all edges gilt. Plates/text covers religious festivals, games, pastimes and domestic life to the Imperial and Shogunal systems, criminal justice and the Takaido, and also touches on Japanese characteristics. Day & Sons lithographic plates were of such superior technical quality that the firm was granted a Royal Warrant

Brooks and applause for the Mudford Troop of Yeomanry Cavalry, 245mm, body and base cracked* Following rejection of the Second Reform Bill by the House of Lords on 8th October riots ensued in many provincial towns and cities. Notable was Yeovil where the houses of a number of local dignitaries were sacked.
