Egg, London, London Silver Hallmarks For 1782, Maker's Mark Of Michael BarnettReconverted from percussion, with rebrowned twist two-stage barrel (light pitting) turned and chiselled with a foliate band at the girdle, long octagonal breech engraved with foliage on the flat behind the girdle and with gold-lined crowned maker's stamp on the top flat at the rear (reduced, hutt replaced), silver spider fore-sight, grooved border engraved tang decorated with a bird and flowering foliage, border engraved replacement lock incorporating some old internal working parts, inscribed 'D. Egg' and decorated with two game birds in a landscape on the stepped tail, figured half-stock (reduced from full and repaired around the lock cavity) with dark horn cap and carved in relief with a flower-head and foliage around the barrel tang, grip with characteristic chequering, and butt with raised cheek-piece and leather pad secured by a border of small brass nails, the side flat inset with silver Prince of Wales's feathers and motto, border engraved mounts comprising butt-plate decorated on the heel tang with two gun dogs in a landscape involving a sporting gun propped against the branch of a tee, all beneath flowering foliage, spur trigger-guard in the French fashion with foliate and pineapple finials, the bow decorated with a sporting trophy on the border engraved bow, turned ramrod-pipe, and later steel-tipped ramrod, London proof marks 92.9 cm. barrel Footnotes:Almost certainly made for the Prince of Wales, later King George IV (d. 1830) or one of his friendsThe Prince of Wales's collection of new and antique arms, displayed at Carlton House, forms (together with his father's collection) the nucleus of the present-day collection at Windsor.
