Helsinki Participant’s medal very fine, others extremely fine; the majority in cases or holders as issued [two cases damaged] £1,500-£2,000 --- John Jennings (1902-97), b Platt Bridge, Wigan; worked as a railway fireman before commencing his footballing career with Wigan Borough, 1922-5; joined First Division side Cardiff City, making his debut for them on 10 October 1925; appeared 94 times for Cardiff at Ninian Park, featuring in almost every league match played by the team from February 1928 to January 1930, when he was sold to Middlesbrough; captain of Middlesbrough 1930-3 and selected for a FA tour of Canada in 1931; left Middlesbrough in 1936 for a half-season at Preston North End before signing for Bradford City in February 1937, for whom he made 28 appearances and a further three in the FA Cup; joined the coaching team at Northampton Town 1945 and remained with the ‘Cobblers’ for over 20 years, living in the town until his death. Jennings also worked as a coach for the England national amateur football team and the Great Britain Olympic football team, when it was managed by Walter Winterbottom and Charlie Hughes, among others, between 1952 and 1971

ARGENTINA, Jockey Club, Buenos Aires, enamelled silver badges (2), 1930, 1946, both named (Hector Ghiraldo), 30 and 28mm; DUBAI, The Inaugural Dubai World Cup, 1996, an Official’s enamelled brass badge; GERMANY, Olympic Games, 1936, an enamelled brass Visitor’s badge, 31mm (GV 105); U.S.A., ‘Man o’War, 1947, a bright bronze medal, unsigned, 32mm; together with miscellaneous base metal medals (4, two of Jacobite interest) [8]. First four about very fine and better, others in varied state; Dubai mounted in a wooden frame £60-£80 --- ‘Man o’War (1917-47), was a champion American throughbred racehorse born in Lexington, KY. Bought at the yearling sale in Saratoga in 1918 for $5,000 by Samuel Doyle Riddle from Glen Riddle, MD, Riddle turned down an offer of $400,000 for the horse two years later, by which time ‘Big Red’, as he was nicknamed because his coat had tinges of yellow and gold, had been named as the unofficial 1920 American horse of the year. During his racing career from June 1919 to October 1920 he won 20 of the 21 races for which he was entered, and $249,465 in prize money. Put out to stud in 1922, he sired over 60 subsequent race winners, one of whose offspring was Seabiscuit, the 1938 Horse of the Year

Roman Imperatorial Coinage, POMPEIANS, Sextus Pompeius, Denarius, Sicily, 42-36, bust of Pompey the Great right, jug to left and lituus to right, rev. Neptune standing between Anapias and Amphinomus, 3.93g (Craw. 511/3a; BMCRR Sicily 7-12; RSC 17). Struck off-centre, otherwise better than very fine £300-£400 --- Anapias and Amphinomus find prominence in mythology for their actions during the eruption of Mount Etna. The two brothers slowed their escape from Catana in order to carry their parents from the city, a scene visualised on the reverse of this coin. The subsequent lava flow from the volcano is said to have consumed those citizens who troubled only to save gold and silver but spared the pious Catanæan brothers. Sextus’ use of the scene parallels his familial piety to that of Anapias and Amphinomus
Roman, bronze Bacchus (Dionysus), 1st-2nd cent. AD, 12cm x 8cm, on a circular lead-filled plinth 1.5cm high, standing youthful male figure, nude except for a mantle clasped on his right shoulder which falls to his left hip, his weight on his left leg with right leg extended forwards, musculature well defined, right arm extended downwards, holding the remains of a drinking vessel, left arm extended sideways, wearing a head-dress of vine leaves and bunches of grapes, face smiling, eyes recessed and would have been inlaid with silver. Left hand missing, otherwise in very fine condition with a red/green patina £400-£600 --- Provenance: P. Dawson Collection. Roman, a bronze Chariot or Cart Fitting, 2nd-3rd cent. AD, 13.5cm x 8.5cm, modelled as a bust of a young man dressed in a paludamentum (a cloak fastened with a circular clasp at the right shoulder), the head moulded in the round with long hair brushed forward, looking straight ahead with large lentoid eyes, silver inlaid pupils and closed mouth, the bust set on a decorated plinth with flaming torches at each side and open at the back with semi-circular attachments, the base showing the remains of an iron nail for attachment. Excellent condition, smooth light green green patina £2,000-£2,400 --- Provenance: Gorny & Mosch Auktion 218 (Munich), 18 December 2013, lot 304. Medieval, Romanesque silver-gilt Brooch, late 12th-13th cent., 2.5cm x 2cm, cast in openwork form in high relief with a nude male figure standing over a plant with scroll-like tendril leaves. Right arm missing, otherwise very fine and with the gilding almost complete £300-£400 --- Provenance: From a UK private collection. This may originally have been a buckle plate with a companion which featured Eve, and was converted to a brooch when that was lost. Comparison with illuminated manuscripts suggests that the figure is Adam in the garden of Eden

The watch having a white / silver dial with Arabic numerals to the chapter ring, 17 jewels Swiss movement set in a 375 / 9ct gold case with rolled gold spring bracelet. Hallmark to the inside of the back dated London 1973 by D Shackman & Sons. Condition: good condition overall, general wear and tear, winds up and ticks but sold as untested.

The watch having a silver dial with Roman numerals to the chapter ring, power reserve indicator to 12 o'clock, 34 jewels automatic movement set in a stainless steel case with brown leather straps. The watch come a multi slots presentation box. Condition: good used condition, small ware on the strap. At the time of arriving the watch was ticking and winding but sold as untested.
