Before, however, the marriage took place, she inherited a small fortune, and rejected Beattie for William Smart, a successful corn merchant. After completing a narrative of his relations with the lady, published by Alexander Silver in 1863 as a `Statement of fact`, and `The last`, a long suicide note, Beattie went back to St Cyrus and shot himself by the side of his sister`s grave on 29 September 1823." - Oxford DNB..

America around the Cape to Wellington, New Zealand and returning via Cape horn to England, contemporary roan, lettered in gilt to upper cover, silver edged, slightly rubbed, 8vo., April 1884 to July 1885. ***A voyage of over a year that took Fletcher around the world. Spending from July 1884 to June 1885 staying with relatives and friends and travelling the islands, " Jan.28 [1885]....to Pahautanui....opposite the inn is a steep hill, on the summit stood a Maori war pa, the site now being occupied by a church. ....Passing through the Horokiwi Valley, we began to descend the Paikakariki Hill, the road now winding..., the green island of Kapiti on the left, the sea as calm as a pond" withj many other descriptive passages of his travels throughout New Zealand..

I am quite sufficiently well known as an author myself to be able to dispense with the publicity of appearing as a translator" § Autograph Letter signed "Nigel" from Nigel Nicolson to John Phillips, 1p., 8vo, Sissinghurst Castle, Kent, 3rd November 1981, thanking him for returning "the VT/Vita letter" and commenting on the sale of her letters, "I have offered to sell to Yale all Violet`s letters to Vita, so that they can join Vita`s to her" § Ashton-Gwatkin (Frank, diplomatist, 1889-1976) 18 Autograph Letters and 1 Autograph Card signed to John Phillips, on various matters, including references to Nigel Nicolson`s book about Vita Sackville-West, "for selling his mother`s secret", and on Violet, "Another unpleasant odour arises from the once lovely Ombrellino; and again I hear the flutter of the vultures wings. I have seen Sotheby`s catalogue with tears. And have noted that the silver bowl which I gave Violet and which she intended to leave to Pirie-Gordon is being sold...", and her letters, "Violet`s letters to me from Scotland I should like to have back.
