Sword Dollars were originally denominated at 30 Shillings, hence the 'XXX' mark to the reverse. The thistle countermark dates from 1578, redenominating the coin at a value of 36s 9d. King James VI of Scotland was a year old when this hammered silver coin was issued in his name as part of his first coinage. Later in life he would succeed to the English throne as James I, though a true common currency between his two kingdoms would not be created for more than a century.
