An interesting family sword, being an 1854 pattern officer’s sword of the Coldstream Guards, slightly curved, fullered, plated blade 32” by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, no 141104 (for 1865) on backstrap, etched with crowned VR cypher, regimental badge, laurel wreath, 10 battle honour scrolls “Egypt” and Sphinx to (later added) “Magersfontein”, with family crest and scroll “L.P. Dawnay”, silver plated regulation hilt incorporating regimental badge, chequered backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its plated scabbard. GC (minor plating wear and bubbling) Plate 1 Note: The sword of the Hon. Lewis Payn Dawnay, 2nd Son of the 7th Viscount Downe (Ensign Coldstream Gds 1865, retired Lt Col 1882) and then of his son, Guy Payan Dawnay, DSO (Lieut. Coldstream Gds 1899, distinguished career, retired Major General 1919) who served throughout the Boer War, including Magersfontein, and evidently had that battle honour added to the blade which was then chromed and the hilt silver plated.
