Lot 458

19th century percussion pistol of Indian origin with chased flared barrel and plain brass butt cap. 16” overall 10” barrel. Originally all or partly a European firearm it has been modified by local craftsmen on the Indian continent to the Indian style. The original barrel has been flared out to 1 1/16“ from approx. 2 ½” from the muzzle and chased basic floral decoration added to the breech section. The lock is very stiff but complete and working to some extent but the percussion nipple is damaged probably from dry firing. Wood to metal fit is poor with some damage to wood which is to a dark patination and may have been more recently varnished. Barrel is pinned to wood with one pin approx. 3 ½” from the muzzle. There is no provision for a ramrod, as often the case with Indian pistols, as this tended to be carried separately on a lanyard. An inlet decorative escutcheon is missing from the top of the butt and may have been removed for silver content. A clean and complete example. Antique.

Approximately 4cm width x 4.5cm height. Condition: very good. Good colour and patina to the silver finish. The badge would appear to have been lacquered in past, and there are traces of this to both the front and back.

Lot 4

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to 3-2573 Sjt W.Vaughan of the 1st Hampshire Regiment. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Each medal has a short length of original ribbon. Notes: Sergeant Vaughan first entered the conflict on November 12th 1914, and he later served with Machine Gun Corps using service number 73571. His medal index card also refers to him as being ‘William Charles E Vaughan’. He originally enlisted for service on July 2nd 1909, and was discharged on November 18th 1918. Sjt Vaughan is also entitled to the Silver War Badge, but there is no apparent entitlement to the clasp for the star. Condition: some wear through polishing. The detail has softened to the high points, but the medals are otherwise good. The ribbons are a little worn in places.

Lot 126

An unusual, large sized wooden 1870 Iron Cross, with wall hanging loop to the reverse side. Of plywood construction, with original black and silver painted detail. Raised ‘W’ and ‘1870’ applied to the front, and faint evidence of there having been a crown also applied to the top arm of the cross. The piece is likely of 20th century manufacture, perhaps around the WW1 era, but its exact purpose is unknown.  It was possibly a memorial piece for a veteran of the Franco-Prussian war. Approximately 26.8cm x 26.8cm. Condition: some losses to the corners in places, revealing the plywood beneath. As mentioned in the main description, the crown that would have been sited above the W is seemingly missing.

Lot 263

Lot 99

A WW1 officer’s 1914 Star with ‘Mons’ clasp, Prisoner of War medal trio, a portrait of the officer while in captivity, and other associated items. To include: a 1914 Star with original sewn on Mons clasp, British War Medal, each named to Captain Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe (1888-1948), of the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). Also included is a framed head & shoulders oil portrait of Captain Drury-Lowe, painted in 1917 while a P.O.W. In the Schwarmstedt camp, in Lower Saxony. The portrait is named, dated and has the artists name of ‘G.G.Jackson’ signed at the edge. G.G Jackson was almost certainly a fellow officer prisoner, and only person carries that name who was a prisoner at the time the portrait was made; Captain G.G.Jackson of the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Other items included in the lot include a WW1 era compass by Newton & Co of London, 2 1935 silver jubilee medals, a 1937 Edward VIII coronation medal, a Royal Navy bullion blazer badge, a 1904 dated (written in French) to ‘Monsieur Drury Lowe’ from the Royal College of Art, and a 1951 dated Engineers Certificate of Competency, and a framed baptismal certificate for Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe, and dated November 22nd 1888 (confirmed 1905). Notes: Capt Drury-Lowe’s medal index card confirms that the 1914 trio and clasp was his full medal entitlement. It would appear that he was also entitled to the Silver War Badge. He first entered the conflict on September 20th 1914, and according to published records by Cox & Co, he was reported as missing on October 20th 1914. He was confirmed as interned on February 6th 1918, and was repatriated on November 18th 1918. The Cox & Co records erroneously refer to him as ‘Capt W.Drury-Lowe’ of the Notts & Derby Regiment, but this must be this officer as there not another Drury-Lowe listed. Information supplied by the vendor suggests that the oil portrait was painted on the back of biscuit tin, and it was certainly framed in Germany judging by the label on the back panel. His medal index card also refers to the ‘Exonerated Officers List’, which clearly references his time as a POW, and the subsequent questions he would have been required to answer to army command upon his repatriation. Attestation papers suggest he first enlisted for service wit the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters in March 1908. Unusually, the mounting bar for the medals is marked for Spink & Son of London, but whether they just supplied the bar or mounted the medals is unknown. Condition: generally very good. The medals are swing mounted (with original ribbons) on a bar for wear, with a fine colour and patina to each. The portrait is generally good, with just a little chipping to the frame in places.

Lot 56

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to 9831 Pte William A Green of the 2nd Highland Light Infantry. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: Pte Green first entered the conflict on August 14th 1914. He had originally attested for service on August 28th 1905. William was discharged from service while serving with the 3rd battalion on November 20th 1914, with the reason being cited as 'sickness'. He was awarded the Silver War Badge, number 14912. There is no evidence of a clasp being claimed or awarded. Condition: generally good. The medals are loosely mounted on to a backing card, using the original ribbons for the star and victory medal (the BWM is a later replacement). The medals do not appear to have been over polished, and just have a normal level of age related toning.

Lot 264

A fine quality and heavy gauge cast sterling silver officers cap badge for the Gordon Highlanders. Of standard form, with the stags head to the centre, coronet, and wreath. Scroll with ‘By Dand’ motto. 3 silver lugs to the reverse side. Fully U.K. hallmarked to the reverse for Edinburgh 1994, with the makers mark of ‘GB’. Approximately 5.7cm width x 7cm depth - weight 50.5g. Condition: very good. Very light service wear in places, but nothing that detracts whatsoever.

Lot 253

A late Victorian era Scottish officers waist belt clasp / buckle, in gilt and silvered metal. Likely for the Royal Scots Fusiliers. 2 part interlocking construction, with the central boss having the traditional Scottish thistles which appears to be either unmarked silver, or silver plated. Rectangular shaped belt loops to both halves, plus both halves are stamped with a small number 4, indicating that they are a matched pair. Approximately 7cm across with both halves joined. Condition: generally good, with some age and service wear. There is a fracture to the metal on the left hand belt loop, but this is only visible from the reverse side. Some old adhesive residue to the reverse, but it’s likely that this could be cleaned off.

Lot 258

A vintage sterling silver officers cap badge for the Gordon Highlanders. A die stamped example, which standard design and ‘By Dand’ motto to the front side. 2 silver lugs to the reverse side. Fully U.K. hallmarked to the reverse side for Birmingham 1992, with the makers mark of ‘GB’. Approximately 7.2cm width x 6.9cm depth. Condition: very good. Only very light service wear.

Lot 102

3 items of WW2 German interest. To include: a period photograph album, with silver foil blocked lettering to cover that reads ‘Meine Kriegserinnerungen’ (My War Memories), to the top left an applied metal decal of an Army Motorcyclist, and his companion in the sidecar. The album appears to have never been used, with all its internal pages being empty, and all the usual ‘spiderweb’ pattern thin paper leaves being intact. There is a pencilled price of 5 Reichmarks to the inside cover. Plus, a dummy German M24 ‘potato masher’ stick grenade, which has no metal parts whatsoever, being made completely of a single piece of turned wood The only markings are to the dummy screw off cap, which is embossed ‘42’. The patina and wear to the wood and painted detail would suggest it has some age, but whether the piece is dated 1942 is unknown. It may well have been a practice grenade, or at very least an old reenactment piece. Also, what appears to be a period advertising pamphlet for Dr Josef Goebbels book, Kampf um Berlin. 3 items. The album measures 31cm x 20.2cm, the grenade measures 35.5cm length, and the advertisement measures 13.2cm x 6cm. Condition: generally good. The album has some light age related wear, but on the whole looks unused. The grenade has some paint losses commensurate with age and handling. The advertisement is generally good, with just a little foxing and light creasing.

Mahronda sank in 1942. Various other service books and paperwork are included, and some WW2 and later photographs of Captain Hill. A letter dated December 1940 mentions S.S. Mahratta, and the 2 silver medallions mention S.S. Mahronda and S.S. Mahseer, all of which sunk. Captain Hill successfully negotiated Mediterranean waters to deliver ammunition to Malta in June 1940. The award of his Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal are confirmed on official rolls. Condition: generally very good. The medals are all good, with the gilt finish to the O.B.E being intact, and just a little fading to the ribbons. There is a little verdigris to the 1939-45 star. The paper ephemera shows normal wear for documents of their age, but all documents are clear and readable.

The circumstances surrounding the award of him B.E.M are unknown. Condition: generally good. The medals are mounted for wear and are in good condition. The B.E.M shows a little toning to the silver. He is shown on the General List in 1940 as a Lieutenant, and by 1942 he is shown as a Lieutenant in the Army Pay Corps. His connection to the Polish medal and silver badge is unknown, but the WW2 photograph appears to show him wearing a Poland cloth shoulder title. Condition: generally very good. Some service wear to some pieces, plus some fading to some of the ribbons.

The medals are swing mounted on a bar for wear. Notes: the slip on clasp fitted appears to have some age, and although not being an official issue sew on type, it is likely a contemporary tailors copy or similar. Pte Dickson first entered the conflict on November 11th 1914 as part of the 8th (Lanark) Battalion Highland Light Infantry (Territorial). He later transferred to the Royal Scots (as Cpl), using the service number 335880. He originally enlisted for service on June 2nd 1913, and was discharged on April 23rd 1919. Cpl Dickson is also entitled to the Silver War Badge, number 478044. We have been unable to confirm Cpl Dickson’s entitlement to the clasp. His Medal Index Card is unusually light on information, with no mention of his prior service with the 8/HLI, nor his disembarkation date. The only details recorded as those related to the Royal Scots. Condition: good. Good level of detail present, and normal toning to each medal.

The badge is marked ‘F&S’ to the reverse side, for Firmin & Son. Plus, a WW2 era British No.4 MKII spike bayonet, complete with scabbard. Condition: generally good condition. The beret has had its blue lining deliberately removed to facilitate better shaping, but is in otherwise good condition. The badge is in good order, and has toning to the silver finish. The bayonet retains the majority of its parkerised finish, and shows just normal service wear.

Lot 60

To include: a 1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, and a North Staffordshire Regiment cap badge. Notes: Pte Broad first disembarked for service in France on July 28th 1915. He was discharged from service on December 14th 1918 under paragraph 392 Kings Regulations, and he is entitled to the Silver War Badge number 490051. There is also contradictory evidence in the records that also suggests he was discharged on October 11th 1918. His medal index card confirms the trio as his full medal entitlement. Condition: generally good. The medals have been polished in the past, but still retain a good level of detail. They loosely mounted on a card backing using original ribbons. The badge is in good condition.

Lot 277

A good quality vintage die stamped sterling silver 17th Lancers cap badge. Fully U.K. hallmarked to the reverse side for Edinburgh 1994, with the makers mark of ‘GB’. Approximately 4.8cm width x 4.4cm height. Condition: very good. Some toning to the silver on the front side, plus some very light service wear.

Lot 194

A good quality WW1 period, patriotic embroidered stable belt. Hand made by Arthur Middleton Varah of the Essex Regiment, or more simply known as Arthur Varah. The belt was made by Arthur while convalescing in hospital at Ypres in 1917, as evidenced by his initials ‘AV’ on the item. The piece is embroidered in a tapestry style, using the flag designs of the allied nations of the era. Leather retaining strap and buckles to the ends, plus a small coin style purse affixed to the linen backing of the belt. Notes: Arthur Middleton Varah was born in 1892 in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire. By 1911 he was the under manager at the well known silver manufacturer, Walker & Hall. He attested for service in December 1915, using the service number 41995, and his service record seems to confirm that he was sick at the time the belt was made. His medical records suggest he suffered with nephritis. Arthur passed away in January 1958. Approximately 77cm length (not including the straps), width 5.5cm. Condition: generally very good. Clean condition, with no untoward holes or tears. Leather supple to the buckles and straps, small element of the press stud fastening missing to the purse attachment, but this doesn’t detract.
