UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Silver crown, 1847. Royal Mint. Proof Plain Edge 0.999 Fine silver, N over inverted N in Unita. The so called 'Gothic' crown was never intended for circulation and sold to the public only through official agents, at the time being Hunt and Roskell. It was an immediate success and has always been in high demand, generally held as one of the most beautiful designs British coinage has to offer.Since Royal Mint released the restrike in their Great Engravers Series in 2021, prices of the original Gothic Crowns have soared. Proof-64 graded coins have now sold for as much as $186,000. This heightened interest has also led to more research being done on the different varieties, of which there are many! Some mystique remains around the plain edge varieties which have differing silver content: 0.999 vs 0.925 fine. We have been told these will be separated out in the next Spink catalogue (2024).Crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left, dress decorated with roses, thistles and shamrocks; around in lower case Gothic script, Victoria dei gratia britanniar. reg: f: d Design by William Wyon. / Crowned cruciform shields, Star of the Garter at centre, floral emblems and gothic arches in angles; latin legend in lower case Gothic script reads 'tueatur unita deus anno dom mdcccxlvii' (translation, May God guard these United Kingdoms in the Year of Our Lord 1847). UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold half-sovereign, 1887. London. Imperfect J DISH L508. The issues the mint encountered with the Jubilee coins are well documented and were exacerbated by the pressure for the coins to be ready for the Queen's Golden Jubilee on 20 June 1887. Records show that 1,771,425 half-sovereigns were struck in 1887, but only 871,770, less than 50% of the total, were fit for circulation. To improve metal flow silver was included in the alloy, which makes all 1887 London Jubilee head half-sovereigns stand out for their lighter colour. Although this variety is the most common of the 1887 Jubilee head half sovereigns, it is highly sought after due to the fascinating story surrounding the series, recently told by David Iverson and Steve Hill In their publication 'The Jubilee Head Gold Half Sovereign 1887-1893' (Sovereign Rarities, 2019).Crowned and veiled Jubilee bust facing left; JEB on truncation, imperfect J; inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRIT: REGINA F: D:. / High, crowned and embellished shield-of-arms; date in exergue; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.In secure plastic holder, graded PCGS MS65 , certification number 45509664. A rare mid-18th century pewter sponge box, circa 1750 Of typical spherical form, formed in two parts, the lid with regular pierced holes (for ventilation to dry the sponge) and engraved with stylized flowerheads and foliage, on a short, spreading, circular foot, apparently unmarked, height 9.3cm, diameter 8.8cm Numerous mid-18th century spherical sponge and accompanying soap boxes are recorded in gold, silver-gilt and silver, and sometimes in brass, but rarely in pewter
An interesting, documented and large Charles II pewter Beefeater flagon, dated 1683 The straight-sided drum with collar and ovolo foot, finely engraved ‘Jehu Prancker / Elias Chalke / Church Wardens / 1683 / This Is Part Of The Goods Of The Church of Wilton’, the typical lid with four indistinct hallmarks, twin-lobed thumbpiece centred by a relief cast tear-drop, indistinct touchmark to swan-neck handle, 102 fl.oz., height 30.3cm Provenance: St. Mary’s Church, Wilton, Wiltshire The ‘Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre’, Chippenham, Wiltshire, holds records relating to both a Jehu Prancker and Elias Chalke. Both served as Churchwardens, but only once together, having been appointed on 17 April 1682 to serve for one year. A list of church furniture and ornaments for St. Marys, dated to 1658-1770, records the church owning ’three flagons’. A list, dated to c.1902, refers to a silver paten inscribed ‘Jehu Prancker Elias Chalke Church Warden 1683. This is part of the goods of the Church of Wilton’. In the same list a "Pewter Stoup 11 1/4ins high, 5ins wide at the top, 7ins wide at the base ‘inscribed’", is also recorded. These are the exact dimensions of this flagon The touchmark bears a resemblance to the recorded mark of Anthony Jenkins, Southampton, (fl.1666-1685), (PS5219). However, the hallmarks do not resemble recorded Jenkins marks Handle professionally re-attached.Iron repair to hinge
