Of early Tottenham Hotspur Interest- A presentation silver mounted walking cane to club chairman Mr C D Roberts:, the bamboo cane with silver ferrule engraved 'Vienna 1905/1912, Presented to C D Roberts by the Spurs Players', the top of the cane with silver dog's head and oak leaf mount, the top of the dog's head also initialled 'CDR', assays rubbed, 91cm long.* Notes - Charles Roberts was a local businessman who helped establish the home of the club in 1899 to its present location behind Tottenham High Road which became White Hart Lane. He remained chairman of the club for the next 40 years. At the outbreak of WWI he was asked by a reporter if football would ever take the prominent part in sport as it had done so previously. His reply was 'football was still in its infancy and that it would become even more popular than before. No sport would ever take its place.'
