A staunch Liberal and supporter of Gladstone, who visited Port Sunlight in 1891, he was selected a Liberal candidate for Birkenhead the same year. He stood against a well entrenched Conservative, Lord Bury. Leverhulme threw himself into the political fray organising an extensive campaign by which he reduced the Conservative majority in the 1892 election by almost half. Lever fought Birkenhead in 1892,1894 and 1895 as a Gladstonian Liberal, on each occasion losing to his Conservative opponent. He had no ambition to be an MP but perhaps felt it his duty to help Gladstone, who he strongly supported, by being prepared to be a parliamentary candidate in seats he assumed the Liberals would not win. He went on to fight the Wirral in 1900 - losing again. Then, to his consternation, in the Liberal landslide of 1906, he fought there again and won! He proceeded to agree with the Liberal whips that he would not resign the seat until the next General Election provided he was not expected to attend at Westminster unless specially summoned , thereby avoiding a difficult by-election for the Government. In 1910 he fought Ormskirk and duly lost to the future Lord Derby.
