This watch was included in the Lord Raglan Collection and was the property of The Marquees of Londonderry. Originally when this was bought it was already a very expensive watch indicating that it included many of Breguet's innovations for watches - one of the rarest and most remarkable is the use of the straight line lever escapement which was an adaption of the lateral lever escapement used by the English and by Breguet himself in earlier watches. This version was in time adopted by horology as a whole and forms the base of most modern mechanical watches today; rarer still is the use of oil retention holes in the teeth of the escape wheel. Breguet flirted with ideas for extending the life of the oil by placing a conical reservoir for the oil leading on each tooth - however, as it was expensive and not very effective, it did not become a regular feature in his watches.Purchased Messrs. Bonhams 21st June 2017.Additional InformationLight surface scratches and a tiny dent to the case, no mention of working order is given on any watches. Some toning and tarnishing to the silvered dial.

Amendment;  Please satisfy yourself Before bidding on this lot that it is a genuine Souscription.  BREGUET; a fine and rare silver and yellow metal open face 'Souscription' pocket watch, circa 1805, with plain silver case, yellow metal rims and white enamel dial set with Arabic numerals, five minute markers and 'secret signature' beneath the 12 and 'Breguet N.415', with single blued steel hand, and central square for time adjustment, the fine gilt typical Souscription movement no.29888 (matching case), with blued steel regulator and typical Breguet parachute shock resist, bimetallic compensation curb and under dial ruby cylinder escapement, the dust cover inscribed 'Breguet Invenit & Fecit N.415', diameter 61mm, approx 169.5g.After Abraham Louis Breguet returned from exile back to Paris in the 1790s, his business was virtually destroyed. He came up with a plan whereby his clients could order a watch, paying a down payment and then the balance when the watch was delivered. This founded the business and allowed him to rebuild. These watches were known as 'Souscription' watches and had the secret scratched signature and number on the dial. This was applied using an early form of pantograph which was an exceptionally complex process and difficult to reproduce cleanly. However, this was imperative due to the number of fake Breguet watches being produced by other manufacturers at the same time. Additional InformationThe dust cover is ever so slightly loose, there are light surface scratches throughout, the dial has a slither chip approx 6mm x 4mm between the 5 and 6 point, light surface scratches and also two very fine hairline cracks, each approx 1cm spurning from the central winding point.
