Peruvian or Bolivian school of the 19th century."Allegory of Peruvian-Bolivian unionism".Polychrome metal plate on both sides.Silver frame.Measurements: 7 x 5,5 cm (plaque); 11 x 7,6 cm (frame). This is a medallion with a metal plate polychromed on both sides which allegorically represents Peruvian-Bolivian unionism. On the obverse, the artist shows the image of the Virgin of Candelaria crowned with the Child, a strictly symmetrical composition of Baroque heritage that does not lose the naturalism or the contained dynamism that reveals the taste of that period. A break of glory serves as a backdrop for the representation of the Virgin and Child, flanked at the base by the flags of Peru and Bolivia waving majestically above a pompous cloud. The souls of the damned, probably an allusion to the anti-unionists, observe this honourable scene burning in the flames of hell. On the back, the artist painstakingly depicts the coronation of the Virgin of Mercy at the hands of Christ and a bishop wearing a mitre. The dove of the Holy Spirit completes a completely narrative composition, technically derived from the stylistic concepts assimilated in the colonial process. However, it can be seen in this work that, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of the independence and political opening up of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity. The technical virtuosity and meticulousness in the depiction of each figure stands out. As already mentioned, the medallion iconographically alludes to Peruvian-Bolivian unionism (or Peruvian-Bolivian nationalism), an initially political and social and later economic trend that emerged in the 19th century, at the beginning of the independence of South American countries from the Spanish empire. This ideology advocated the union of Peru and Bolivia for historical, economic, social and political reasons of both territories before American independence.

17th-century Dutch school. Circle of WILLEM KALF (Rotterdam, 1619-Amsterdam, 1693)."Still Life with Fruit.Oil on panel.Size: 27.5 x 22 cm; 44 x 43 cm (frame).Due to its technical and formal characteristics, the present work can be related to the circle of Willem Kalf, one of the most important Dutch still life painters of all times. It is a small work, faithful to his style, captured in the foreground, in which few but select objects stand out on a table against a dark background. As in many of Kalf's works, there is almost always a bone china bowl, often tilted so that the fruit falls out of it. Willem Kalf was born in Rotterdam in 1619. He was previously thought to have been born in 1622, but research conducted by the archive of H. van Gelder established the painter's correct place and date of birth. In the late 1630s Willem Kalf travelled to Paris and spent time in the circle of Flemish artists in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris. In Paris, he painted mainly small-scale rustic interiors and still lifes. Kalf's rustic interiors are usually dominated by groups of vegetables, buckets, pots and pans, which are arranged in the foreground (e.g. Kitchen Still Life, Dresden, Gemäldegal, Alte Meister). The figures usually appeared in the blurred darkness of the background. Although painted in Paris, paintings of traditional works in Flanders in the early 17th century, by artists such as David Teniers the Younger. The only indication of the Flemish origin of the paintings is that Flemish exponents of the same genre would not have been depicted in their works. The rustic interiors of the calves had a great influence on French art in the circle of the Le Nain brothers. The semi-monochrome still lifes that Calf created in Paris from a link to the banquet or "small banquet pieces" by Pieter Claesz, Willem Claeszoon Heda and others in the 1630s. During the 1640s, Calf further developed the bench into a novel form of sumptuous and ornate still lifes (known as show still life), depicting rich groups of gold and silver vessels. Like other lives of this period, these paintings often expressed vanitas allegories. Kalf's still-life paintings vary little in their structure, and most of them actually present the same objects. There is crockery, with gold and silver vessels, many of which have been identified as goldsmiths, such as Johannes Lutma, and many of which have been identified as goldsmiths.
Venetian school; first half of the 17th century."Venus and Cupid".Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.It presents repainting and restorations.Measurements: 125 x 110 cm.In this sumptuous scene the author presents us a moment of intimacy in which he shows us two gods of the Olympian pantheon in an everyday way. The monumental woman in the centre of the scene dominates the composition both by her bulk and by the reflection of light from her nudity. Seated in front of a large silver basin, the rosy-cheeked young woman is preparing to wash herself and can be seen drying one of her feet. On the left-hand side of the image, a small infant can be seen, who can be deduced to be Cupid by his small wings and by the bow and the dates on the ground next to his figure. Unlike the young and beautiful Venus, who is concentrating on herself, Cupid looks directly at the viewer, while pointing at the young girl, thus making it clear that she is the undisputed protagonist of the scene, as well as demonstrating the maternal-filial relationship between the two. This type of scene in which Venus is accompanied by Cupid has been very popular throughout the history of art, with the intention of reflecting love and eroticism. In this work, the author presents an image with a markedly theatrical character. This can be deduced from the attitudes adopted by the characters, whose poses are stereotyped, thus representing archetypes that coincide with mythological characters. There is an ideal of beauty that is not based on reality, although the painter's study of nature is undeniable, but rather an idealism based on reality through his sum of experience, that is to say, an aesthetic sublimation that reflects a beauty that transcends reality. The work belongs to the Venetian school, which was aesthetically defined by its departure from the classicism of the Roman school. The result is scenes that show a greater interest in the application of colour than in drawing. These are works in which the atmospheric, as can be seen in this particular work, plays a major role. It should also be noted that the socio-political situation of the city of Venice led to the development of an aesthetic taste of a sumptuous and magnificent nature.
