CHINA - JAPAN -- HU CHENG-YEN. Shih-chu-chai chien pu. Peking, Shih Chu Studio, (1952?). 4 vols. W. 142 lvs. w. on each side a cold. woodcut. String bound vols. in or. dec. cloth case w. 2 bone fasteners. (Bind. a bit browned/faintly stained, inner side spine a bit eaten by silver fish, but in very good interior condition). NOTE:Facsimile of a 17th c. Ming Dynasty work (1644-45) that was a milestone in the development of Chinese colour printing. The printer and compiler was Cheng-yen Hu (c. 1582-1672) who is credited for his pioneering printing techniques (i.a. embossed printing). The elegant designs document the style and taste of the period, including motifs that appear in late Ming painting: rocks, bamboo, insects, landscape scenes, famous hermits of antiquity, etc.
