The original 27in. nitro reproved barrels (wall-thicknesses at 18 and 19) with 2 3/4in. chambers and multi-chokes come with the guns. Malcolm Appleby has kindly confirmed that he engraved the guns on commission in 1977 at a cost of #1,400 (cost to day would be approximately #30,000 per gun). Regarding the guns, he states: "I was not given any written brief for the pair and no indication for whom they were for. There was no price mentioned. I was asked to use a bit of gold but being wary of flashiness, I restricted gold to the metal borders that touched the wood and gold name. I was keen to use fauna combined with floral motifs with birds that today are not usually considered birds of the chase as well as today's game. The guns for me were to be a challenge of fine detail - bold polished carving of fences and rugged deep carved detail and yet retaining the integrity of the best British pair of guns. There is no real theme, only that we are all part of nature and we should all have respect for it. There is only one pair like these and no other single sidelock gun is similar”. Footnote: Malcolm Appleby is one of the United Kingdom's foremost gun engravers, his most famous commission being the Raven gun, housed at the Royal Armouries. Gun engraving forms just a part of his repertoire and he has engraved approximately sixty guns since 1968. Other noted commissions he has undertaken are those of the engraving of the orb on the Prince of Wales Coronet, the 500th Anniversary silver cup for the London Assay Office (hallmarked in Edinburgh), the seal for the Victoria and Albert museum, the silver centrepiece for the New Scottish Parliament and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes Trophy for De Beers.
