A silver replica of the Open Championship golf trophy ewerGarrard & Co Ltd, London 1985Profuse chased decoration, elongated neck and curved shoulders, the slightly tapering cylindrical body with four panels, one depicting a standing golfer in full swing, knopped pedestal foot, on a three-tiered wood base, each with a plain silver band, in original fitted box, overall height 35.8cm, weight 15ozFootnotes:ProvenanceFrom information provided by the vendor, two-third scale trophies made by Garrard's were traditionally given to the winners of the Open Championship. This example was purchased some 30 years ago directly from a director of the company prior to them being awarded.HistoryThe Open Championship silver claret jug is arguably golf's most famous prize, but it was not awarded to the first Open champion Willie Park in 1860, instead he received the Challenge Belt. However, if a player won the competition on three consecutive years, he could then own the Challenge Belt, which Young Tom Morris achieved in 1868-1870. As such there was no event contested in 1871, as there was no trophy to present and a solution to this was resolved, as detailed from The Open website:Agreement was finally reached on September 11, 1872 between the three clubs that were to host The Open — Prestwick, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club. They decided that the Champion would receive a medal and that each of the three clubs would contribute £10 towards the cost of a new trophy, which was to be a silver Claret Jug, instead of another Belt. Its proper name was to be The Golf Champion Trophy. The original trophy was awarded to players annually until 1927. When Walter Hagen won in 1928, he was given a replica and the original was put on permanent display at the clubhouse at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews. Champions continue to receive the replica trophy, on which they get their names engraved and get to keep for a year before returning to the R&A upon the conclusion of their reign. Champions receive their own replica to keep. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A rare oversize silver telescopic propelling pencilSampson Mordan & Co, French import mark double-struck for pre 1893, incuse stamped S. MORDAN & CO Tapering cylindrical in form, a monumental telescopic propelling pencil, when pulling open from shut, the decreasing tapering sections appear one by one, enabling the oversize writing lead to emerge, the whole concertinas up into a cylindrical case, a large suspension ring attached, length open 76cm, weight 13oz.Footnotes:Sampson Mordan (1790–1843) was a British silversmith and a co-inventor of the first patented propelling pencil. His partner at the time was John Isaac Hawkins and they filed a patent for their invention in 1822. Mordan quickly bought out Hawkins and in 1823 registered his first silver mark. By October of 1823 he had formed another partnership, this time with a wealthy stationer by the name of Gabriel Riddle. Under the name of 'S. Mordan and Co' they carried on business as Mechanists and Manufacturers of Patent and other articles, at 22 Castle Street, Finsbury, London.Although 'S. Mordan & Co' had begun primarily manufacturing propelling pencils, the company also produced other products of excellent design and quality. By 1842 they were advertising a multitude of products, including: patent pencil cases in various designs, novelty pencils in shapes of pistols and flutes etc, pencil leads, cedar drawing pencils, self-adjusting pen holders, patent oblique pens, portable quill pens, letter copying presses, locks, book edge locks, cash and deed boxes, fireproof merchant chests, medicine chests, smelling bottles, fountain ink stands, travelling ink wells and seal presses for stamping paper. Sampson Mordan (Senior) died on 9th April 1843 and the company was passed into the hands of two of his sons, Sampson Mordan Junior and Augustus Mordan. At this time the company were listed as having premises at 41 City-Road, Finsbury, in the County of Middlesex and also at 72 Cheapside in the City of London. The company continued to flourish, and the two brothers were joined in partnership by Edmund George Johnson and Zachariah Watkins. In the 1870s Sampson Mordan Junior retired to live in France, eventually dying in Paris in 1881. It has been mooted that this unusual monumental silver propelling pencil was especially commissioned and given to Sampson Mordan Junior on his retirement, as a gift from the company. This would explain the French import marks and the fact that it appears to be the only one of its type and size. However, this is just hearsay. The other theory is it could possibly have been used as a display model for a shop in France, which would also explain its size and the import marks. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Shuker matriculated as a Classical Scholar from St. Olave's School in 1884 and graduated from St Catharine's College, Cambridge in 1887. He was a fine schoolmaster and athlete; he began in Halifax and then came south to Framlingham, ending up at Newport, Salop, where he made a great success as Headmaster of the Adams' Grammar School, retiring some ten years later to Falmouth, where he ended his days.Haberdashers' Adams Grammar School, which is still in existence, was founded in 1656 by Alderman William Adams, a wealthy City of London merchant and haberdasher, who was born in Newport and whose younger brother Sir Thomas Adams became Lord Mayor of London. Adams had no children and never married, so therefore decided to leave a bequest for the foundation of the school, which was first opened on 25 March 1656, during the politically unstable and volatile period of the English Interregnum. Having received permission from Oliver Cromwell to found the school, Adams sought to further ensure the school's continued existence by appointing the Master and Wardens of the Haberdashers' Company as governors in perpetuity. As one of the few schools founded during the Interregnum period, the school's articles of foundation were reconfirmed by Act of Parliament in 1660, upon the Restoration of the Monarchy; a copy of which is held in the school archives. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

After training at the Fachschule für Holzindustrie in Vienna, from 1897 to 1901 Prutscher studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule under Josef Hoffmann, who later became a Director of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop). At the turn of the century, a number of avant-garde Viennese designers made an abrupt switch from the flowing organic lines of Jugendstil and Art Nouveau to a strict yet vigorous geometry. In 1903, these designers banded together to form the Wiener Werkstätte, a designers' cooperative under the direction of the noted architect and designer Josef Hoffmann. Founded on the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, the Wiener Werkstätte strove to provide a range of well-designed, often handmade products for a sophisticated audience and indeed could supply everything from an architectural setting to the smallest decorative accessory.Outside manufacturers were frequently used to produce and distribute designs that the Wiener Werkstätte was unable to realise in their own studios. By the early 1920s the Wiener Werkstätte had opened branches in Paris, Zurich, and New York. Influenced by Hoffmann, Prutscher frequently used geometrical and square forms in his early works, as can be seen in this triform candleholder. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
