CELTICA, SILVER DRACHM OF THE BITURIGES, Bourges area, 1st century BC, 3.325g, 2h. DT 3363. Attractively toned. Extremely fine. From the Fragaria collection The Bituriges was a Celtic Gaul tribe with its capital at Bourges (Avaricum). Their name supposedly meant "Kings of the world". Early in the 1st century BC, they had been one of the main Gaul tribes, especially in terms of druids and their political influence. But they soon declined in power as the Druids were an important target for Julius Caesar in his conquest of Gaul. Starting Price: €400
FRANCE, A SILVER DENARIUS OF PEPIN THE SHORT, Saint-Etienne of Bourges, ca. 754-768, 1.066g, 1h. Depeyrot -. Very rare. Attractively toned. Broad flan. Minor crack, otherwise, good very fine. From a European private collection Pepin the Short was the King of the Franks from 751 until his death. He was the first of the Carolingians to become King. It is not known where the "The Short" epithet came from, if it was used during his lifetime, or how tall Pepin actually was. His rule was historically important and of great benefit to the Franks as a people. He made the Carolingians de jure what his father had made them de facto - the ruling dynasty of the Franks and the foremost power of Europe.
