*Hyderabad Regiment. A pair of WWI regimental silver plated goblets, each engraved with the crest of 19th Hyderabad Regiment, the foot with inscription 'The Officers 3rd Battalion XIX Hyderabad Regiment From Lieut. B.B. Haynes 23-5-24', the other inscribed 'The Officer's 1/97th Infantry From 2nd Lieut. H.S. Larkin 5-12-17', 20cm high Lieutenant H.S. Larkin was present at the Amritsar Massacre in 1919 and was commanding 50 soldiers at Ahmedabad when a crowd attacked them wielding swords. Larkin ordered three of his men to fire, but this had little effect. Another attack was launched shortly after and Larkin ordered all of his men to fire but this could not prevent the attackers, Larkin drew his revolver and pointed it at a man and fired, his weapon jammed and his opponent was able to assault him, slicing his arm with the sword. Lawson, who was shot down twice during "Bloody April" and wounded during bombing raids over Lille, The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, 2nd Type, Civil Division, Commander's (C.B.E.) neck badge, silver gilt and enamel with neck riband in Garrard & Co case of issue, The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, 2nd Type, Military Division, Officer's (O.B.E.), silver gilt in Garrard & Co case of issue 1914-15 Star (PS-2942 Pte J. Lawson. R. Fus:), British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. J. Lawson . R.F.C.), General Service 1918-62, G.V.R., one clasp, Iraq (F/O. J. Lawson. R.A.F.), Defence and War Medals, 1953 Coronation, first four and last lacquered, good very fine and better, mounted for wearing, with many original documents and photographs including three b/w portrait photographs of the recipient in uniform (notably in RFC uniform), postcards of the recipient mostly group images whilst serving with the Royal Fusiliers, many inscribed verso by the recipient plus copied paperwork including typed accounts of "Bloody April" CBE London Gazette 10.6.1954. OBE London Gazette 1.1.1945. Wing Commander James Lawson born in Hallwell, Lancashire, 1895, served with the Royal Fusiliers during the Great War on the Western Front from 14.11.1915, discharged 5.8.1916 and appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, on the 5th April 1917, Lawson was engaged in a fight over Belgium just before midday being attacked by two German aircraft over St Eloi at 10,000 feet, the FE flown by Lawson and Sergeant Clayton was badly shot up by a single seater Albatross Scout and landed at Abeele airfield. Later on 7 April 1917 Lawson was again shot down this time by German Ace Lieutenant Walter von Bulow-Bothkamp (accredited for 28 aerial victories), Lawson whilst serving with 20 Squadron was flying over Ploegsteert when his aircraft was intercepted and forced to land south of Ploegsteert Wood, Lawson was unhurt but his observer 2nd Lieutenant H.N. Hampson was badly wounded and died later. Later in a bombing raid off Lille, Lawson was wounded when hit in the shoulder and right arm, post war service saw Lawson commissioned to Squadron Leader 21.4.1922 in No.14 Squadron (Palestine Wing, Ramleh), retired from service 13.5.1946 retaining the rank of Wing Commander. Mitchell, extremely fine plus silver War Badge, presented in a glazed frame, with copied research 11228 Private Joseph Mitchell, born in Painswick, Stroud 1864, enlisted in the 4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment at Bristol in 1885, served during the Boer War from 1900-02, transferred to the Army Veterinary Corps and served on the Western Front from 4.12.1915, discharged 20.10.1917. A WWII Third Reich silver plated two handle honour cup, with applied Lufwaffe wings, 19.5cm high mounted on a veined marble base with brass presentation plaque engraved 'Belgische Festung Eben Emael 1940, Luftlandeinvasion auf Kreta 1941, Fallschirmiager Wolg. Pistor', 23.5cm high overall Presented to Fallschirmiager (Paratrooper) Wolfgang Pistor in 1941 for his involvement during the Battle of Crete (the first battle that German Paratroopers had been used en masse). *WWI. A Group of six to Group Captain W.E. Purdin (1899-1973), Royal Air Force, British War and Victory Medals (Flying Officer W.E. Purdin R.A.F.), India General Service 1908-35, G.V.R., one clasp, Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919 (Flying Officer W.E. Purdin, R.A.F.), Defence and War Medals, Iraq Active Service Medal, first two officially renamed, good very fine, court mounted for wearing, together with two logbooks, the covers with recipients name in block print, with RFC Training Transfer Card, first commencing 4.4.1922, last entry 31.10.1929, second logbook, commencing 1.11.1929, last entry 30.10.1952, plus a large George V silver tray, Sheffield 1924, engraved to the recipient on the occasion of his marriage, 14 May 1932, finely engraved with 26 friends of R.A.E. including Flight Lieutenant G.H. Stanforth AFC (Schneider Trophy Team 1929, and world speed record holder in 1931), approx 44oz, with a large amount of original photographs and documents, including group photographs of the recipient uniform, newspaper cuttings and letters plus extensive copied paperwork Group Captain William Edward Purdin, first commission14.8.1918, Flying Officer 12.12.1919, Squadron Leader 1.10.1935, Wing Commander 1.11.1938, Group Captain 1.3. 1941. Between April 1918 and April 1922 Purdin was stationed in India, however the first logbook for this period was mislaid, 650 hours were brought through as pilot and 150 hours as Gunner/Observer, he was posted to Duxford as an Instructor in 1922 and posted to 4 FTS in Egypt and continued to instruct, remaining there until 1925, he was then posted to No.6 Squadron in Iraq and carried out bombing raids on a camp on 22.4.1925, followed by two more on 5.5.1925. He crash landed his aircraft in a Wadi on 3.8.1925 after engine trouble, on 2.4.1926 more bombing raids on French-Syria frontier, various UK service, on 4.9.1929 Purdin was flying a Gorcock and was carrying out an Airscrew test, the wing broke and he had to bale out and use his parachute, he became one of the first founding members of the Caterpillar Club. In 1930-31 he continued serving with the Experimental Section of the RAE and on 22.6.1931 he flew in the Bleriot XI (a replica of the type used to fly across the Channel in 1911), he was also presented with as signed photograph by Mr and Mrs Bleriot (included with the lot), various active service through the 1930s mainly being stationed in Egypt and Cranwell. At the beginning of WWII he was based in Farnborough and during the Battle of Britain he carried out several defence patrols, in 1941 he was posted to Canada to command 31 OTU, various other posts and retired from service in February 1946 having served 31 years, post military service saw Purdin flying commercial airliners including British West Indies and Aer Lingus. Slade, Kings Royal Rifle Corps Later Squadron Leader, Royal Air Force, Military Cross., G.V.R., unnamed as issued, good very fine, in case of issue, together with various original documentation including birth, marriage and deaths certificates, certificate for Military Cross dated 14.5.1918, Commission document dated 1.7.1940 (Pilot Officer, R.A.F.), certificate for M.I.D. dated 1.1.1945, newspaper cutting, black and white photograph of the recipient in uniform, a silver medal for 'St Dunstans Billiard Fund', another for 'West End Amateur Football Association' plus '59th Bde France 1918' all won by the recipient Squadron Leader William Christopher Slade, served during the Great War with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 6.2.1818, Lieutenant 1.9.1918, relinquished commission 19.3.1919, served with the Royal Air Force during WWII, commissioned Pilot Officer 1.7.1940, relinquished commission 27.7.1954. M.C. London Gazette 14.5.1918 T./Sec. Lt. (A./Capt.) W.C. Slade, K.R.R.C.- 'When in command of a company during recent operations he did great service in keeping his Commanding Officer accurately informed as to the situation during the whole day, and hung on to a very difficult position on the left flank of the battalion extricating his company after it was dark. On other occasions, though his company were being heavily shelled and suffered severe casualties he hung on to his position as long as possible and commanded his men very ably, showing great courage and coolness'.
