Grouping of Letters Written By General Sir Bindon Blood GCB (1842-1940) Regarding the Malakand Field Force, Buner Field Force, Tirah Expedition and Winston Churchill, the letters written to the Reverent E J F Davies consist of one dated 12th May 1929 when he states he is enclosing his signature in three parts, this is included with the lot, he also makes reference to fellow officers he served with during the Malakand Field Force and also Winston Churchill’s book written about the Malakand Field Force, “He gives you a good idea of the atmosphere and of the spirit of the soldiers – Ever gallantly marching through most pellucid air on the road followed by Alexander when he invaded India”. This letter is signed “yours sincerely B. Blood”. The second letter in the grouping is a 12 page hand written example by General Sir Bindon Blood, written to a W Davies on the 25th May 1929, in this he recommends Churchill’s book on the Malakand Field Force but the 1899 edition. Within the 12 sided letter he gives good details of the campaign, “At the end of July (1897) came rising in Swat and neighbourhood, with the attack on the Malakand Position and on the post at Chakdara, 11 miles further on, on the Chitral Road. I settled lower and upper Swat (after raising the siege of Malakand and relieving Chakdara on the 2nd August) during the month of August. Meanwhile the disturbance had spread all over the country in the triangle between the Kabul and Indus Rivers – including important districts of Mohmans, Bajauris and Bunerwals, besides other less important areas. Also trouble began in the Kuram Valley, beyond Kohat, where troops were assembled under my friend General Yeatman-Biggs, who carried on some desultory fighting with the Tirah Afridis, which grew into the Tirah expedition under Sir William Lockhart” “Meanwhile, in September, I dealt with the Mohmands. This was a very interesting affair, in which I employed some six brigades. The Mohmand Country and the part of Banjaur near it, with the route from Abajai, had not been visited by any European for, in all probability, well over 1000 years. I dealt thoroughly with the Mohmands and, leaving my friend General Edmond Elles to finish the settlement and exploration of the country, I went back slowly through Bajaur, settling a troublesome affair with some tribes there, and thoroughly examining the country” “At the beginning of January 1898 I undertook and carried out, in a total of 11 days, with the loss of one British soldier killed, in invasion of Buner, which was regarded as a very serious matter, because the Bunerwals – fine fellows – had kept out our Army in 1863, and then raised the “Spectre of Umbeyla” – Umbeyla being the name of the pass where our expedition was stuck up for many weeks in 1863, and very roughly handled. We effectually laid the “Spectre of Umbeyla”, and the expression is now quite forgotten” later adding “Churchill was not with me in Burner, having gone round to Sir William Lockhart’s Tirah Force”. The final letter in the grouping is an hand written letter signed by Eddie Marsh, Winston Churchill’s private secretary, on Treasury Chambers headed paper, dated 8.6.29, written to Rev E J F Davies stating “Mr Churchill desires me to thank you for your letter & to say that his Malakand Field Force is in print in the Silver Library”. A fascinating insight of the history of these campaigns by one of the leading Military figures who took part.
