Seven 18th Century silver buttons makers mark perhaps BB, one engraved with a mounted huntsman the others with named hounds, Rockwood, Thunder, Dashwood, Blossom, Ringwood and LadyThese buttons have a connection with the famous huntsman John Peel but it is not suggested that they were on his coat ‘so gray’. The buttons were given by Mary Peel his widow to her housekeeper Sarah Bean and were passed down through her family until sold by her Great-Great Grandson in 2003.Buttons are 28mm diameter. Overall condition is good, some light wear in line with age and usage. Most of the buttons are marked with makers mark and lion passant, but two have makers mark only.
Hunting Interest: A George III silver tankard, William Shaw II, London 1764, of baluster shape, the domed cover with seated fox finial, the sides with fox hunting scenes, inscribed To Squire John Mytton of Halston Hall, 1818, 23cm high, approximately 893gThere is wear to the detail in the raised areas and a pin hole to the front, below the cartouche on the lower band. The tankard is marked under the cover as well as to the underside. The hinge works well but the pin appears to be base metal so possibly a replacement. The thumb piece is shorter that I would expect and I believe that this upper part may have been lost. Although I cannot see any solder marks beneath the domed cover, I think it is possible that the finial is a later addition. The cartouche to the front relates to Squire John Mytton, a well known regency eccentric. To me, the engraved cartouche looks to have been added.
