A rare Charles II to William & Mary silver circular chamber candlestick, maker's mark only W.W, 1680s, the flat handle pierced with a heart and engraved with a shield, the reverse pricked 'D.W. June 23rd 1693' and 'I.B. 1694', 22.5cm (9in) long, 155g (5 oz) Provenance: From the estate of Christopher and Rosemary Warren See Clayton, Michael The Collector's Dictionary of Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America, New York & Cleveland 1971, p. 45, figs. 84 and 85 for comparable hand candlesticks from the 1680s.Is this a love token The heart would probably fit the story of this item very well. The simplicity of the arms means that we should expect these to be the arms of a family of the middle ages and the arms being contained in a lozenge leads us to expect that the display is intended for an unmarried lady. The mantling is consistent with circa 1680. The blazon: (on a lozenge) gules, a chevron or. Being of the medieval period ensures some uncertainty and we find a number of families at some time assuming these arms: CHAMBERNOUN, COBHAM, DOWNER, DULFORD, TULFORD, GATHWITE, GOUNERY, HADLEY, KIRKLEY, KYME, VERRES, REDLLY, WHITLEY. The initials DW do suggest that we should look further at the WHITLEY family. The WHITLEY family are of Warwickshire, where their family name is derived from a place of the same name near Coventry: worthy of further research.
A George III silver ovoid pedestal sugar caster by Pierre Gillois, London 1771, of classical design, with an acorn finial to the fluted and dot pierced domed cover, the body with raised drapery swags dependant from tied ribbons with tassels, engraved with a vacant shield, the base with raised stiff leaves, in a fluted conical stem with a foliate border and a square base, 19cm (7 1/2in) high, 326g (10.5 oz)

Only one family has these arms and that is the family of GAYTON.

A George III silver candle snuffers and stand, the snuffers possibly by John Buckett, London 1771, the stand by Emick Romer (standard and maker's marks only), the box and scissors snuffers with cast open scroll foliate handles, 16.5cm (6 1/2in) long, the rectangular stand with a husk-and-leaf capped bifurcated handle, the gallery pierced with bars and with swags and patera, a wood base beneath, 17.5cm (6 7/8in) long, each engraved with a crest, the stand also with RL to AP 1772 The date and town marks possibly disappeared in the piercing of the stand. The family crest for POWIS or POWYS. Blazon: An arm erect proper, holding in the hand a fleur-de-lis argent. The association with AL and AP is unsure, although the POWYS name could be involved for AP. Sir Thomas Powys (1649-1719) married Anne Littleton daughter of Adam Littleton, Baronet. The name Littleton has been ever since associated with this line of the Powys family. The crest was most commonly used in the 18th century and later by the Powys family, who were derived from Northumberland.
