Sydney Herbert (British, 1854-1914) View of Florence from the hills signed and titled to the reverse oil on canvas 49 x 75cm (19 x 29in) Other Notes: Inscribed on the reverse is Lord Byron's poem: "But Arno wins us to the fair white walls, Where the Etrurian Athens claims and keeps, A softer feeling for her fairy walls, Girt by her theatre of hills, she reaps Her corn, and wine, and oil and plenty leaps To Laughing life, with her redundant horn Along the banks where smiling Arno sweeps" Sydney Herbert studied in the 1880s at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won two Silver Medals, and he exhibited one painting at the Academy in 1900. He also exhibited at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists (8 paintings from 1880-1900), the Royal Society of Painters in Oils, and the New Gallery. His work is in the Walker Art Gallery, the Manchester City Art Gallery, the Liverpool Gallery, and the Dudley Gallery.

Circle of Sir John Medina (British, 1720-1796) Portrait of a lady, seated, in silver dress and gold cloak, three-quarter length oil on canvas, in a period silvered carved wood frame 124 x 100cm (48 x 39in) Oil on canvas which is unlined. There are numerous holes and tears in the canvas and several patches on the reverse. The paintings also has reverse stretcher bar marks, noticeably across the middle of the canvas. There is associated paint loss around the tears but remarkably the paint layer is in a stable condition overall with little evidence of retouching. The varnish is aged and dull. The silvered frame is in a good condition.
English School, 17th Century A pair of silver-cased portraits of a Royalist gentleman and a lady (stamped with a single unidentifiable mark), the cases of oval form, flat based with friction fitting somewhat domed covers decorated with an oval wreath of repoussé foliage around central cartouche, each engraved with a personal Coat of Arms oil on copper, a pair (2) 9 x 7 x 2cm (4 x 3 x 1in) Provenance: The Hall family of Yorkshire and by descent Other Notes: The coats-of-arms on the silver cases cannot be positively identified. The engravers failed to show shading that would have indicated the tinctures.
