Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Cutthroat Trout" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Rain Forest 33c Cutthroat Trout stamp issued March 29, 2000. Cutthroat Trout are found on the Pacific coast from Prince William Sound, Alaska, to northern California, and inland throughout the western United States and Canada. These fish inhabit the same waters as rainbow trout and feed on aquatic and terrestrial insects, as well as small fish. Adult Cutthroat vary in coloration, depending on their habitat and behaviors. Resident Cutthroat that live in bog ponds range in length from 6 to 16 in. They are usually golden yellow with dark spots on the body, feature dorsal and caudal fins, and display a bright red slash mark under the jaw. Freeswimming residents that are found in large landlocked lakes can grow up to 24 inches in length and are silver with black spots. They have rosy gill covers and a faint slash mark, The sea-run species are smaller - about 18 inches long - and are bluish silver with dark or olive backs and less conspicuous black spots. The characteristic slash is pale yellow. Sea-run adult cutthroat spawn in small, isolated headwater streams from late April to early June. The young emerge from the gravel beds in July, spending three or four years in beaver ponds, sloughs or lakes before they begin their annual migration to sea. Time at sea varies from a few days to several months before returning to their natal stream in the fall, where they mature during the winter. Cutthroat Trout mature at 5 to 7 years and live to be 9 or 10 years old. Image Size: 7 x 6 in. Overall Size: 12 x 11 in. Unframed. (B16695)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Trading in Santa Fe" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "Trading in Santa Fe" published in 1983. Founded in 1609, Santa Fe served as a northern outpost of New Spain for more than two centuries. It remained isolated from the United States until 1821, when a handful of merchants moving westward forged the Santa Fe Trail. Sharing unknown risks, these few courageous men loaded their merchandise on pack animals and successfully completed the trip to Santa Fe in four months. After selling their merchandise at a handsome profit, they quickly returned home to prepare for a return trip. Encouraged by the reports of success, more merchants headed west to Santa Fe to profit from the newly discovered trade center. In Sante Fe, the cargoes of textiles, lead, hardware, cutlery, glassware and many other items were traded for silver, mules, pelts and hides, blankets and other items that were in demand in the East. This "commerce of the prairies" thrived in spite of the hostile Indian tribes of the Southwest, burdensome duties, wagon tolls and official graft, in addition to the normal problems of trade. Indeed, from 1822 a Santa Fe trade existed that changed the history of the Southwest. Trappers and fur traders now worked out of Santa Fe to gain access to the southern Rockies -- rich in beaver and other wildlife. These mountain men, too, became an integral part of the trading business in Santa Fe. Overall Size: 18 x 21 in. Unframed. (B07277)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Shorthair and Persian Cats" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c American Shorthair and Persian Cats stamp issued February 5, 1988. Harking back to the days of Ancient Egypt, the classic Egyptian tabby is the one from which all breeds of cat are thought to have descended. Sporting an auburn coat striped with white, this first shorthair was predecessor to millions. Even today in America, shorthaired cats are the most common, and are found in variations of black, white, tabby and tortoiseshell. The Black Cat, of course, gets the most attention, as its color and stealth have lent it great mystery. Superstition surrounds this cat and its actions are carefully monitored by wary people throughout the world. A true White American Shorthair is very rare and takes years of careful breeding to achieve. In its pure form, this cat has a pink nose and blue eyes. Tabbies are striped and come in varying colors -- gray, brown, red and silver among them. They are generally quite common. Another breed of Shorthair, the Tortoiseshell is distinguished by patches of black, cream, or red. Interestingly, Tortoiseshell Cats are almost always female. A variation is the more common Calico Cat. Also featured with the American Shorthair, a member of the longhaired breeds, the Persian is considered among the elite of domestic cats. Handsome and aloof, the Persians are often blue in color, although it is the White-Haired variety that is presumed to be the original long-haired cat. Black Persians are very rare, but they are exceptionally beautiful and are highly prized by their owners. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 22.25 x 20.25 in. Unframed. (B11367)

Lot 122a

Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Peace Flag" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c 48-Star Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. In 1912, two new states joined the Union -- New Mexico and Arizona. Congress had established New Mexico Territory in 1850, a region that included what is now Arizona and parts of present-day Colorado, Nevada and Utah. When the Arizona and Colorado territories were organized in 1863, New Mexico received its present-day boundaries. By the late 1800s, railroads had linked the territory to the rest of the nation and New Mexico enjoyed a prosperous cattle and mining boom. Arizona Territory progressed as gold and silver discoveries brought miners and settlers to the region. Ranching and farming enhanced economic prosperity, especially when the Southern Pacific Railroad linked Arizona to California in 1877. Because both the New Mexico and Arizona territories developed simultaneously, Congress considered bills in 1905 and 1906 that would form one large state from these two regions. Both bills were defeated, however, and two separate states were created. New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912, while Arizona joined the Union as the 48th state a few weeks later, on February 14. The 48-star flag was officially established by Congress on June 24, 1912, and included two new stars representing New Mexico and Arizona. Image Size: 13.5 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 15 in.
