A SCARCE 17TH CENTURY SILVER HILTED ENGLISH HUNTING SWORD, 48cm slightly curved blade, characteristic hilt with D-shaped knuckle guard, the quillon and the mid-point of the guard decorated with horsemen and bearing a maker's stamp FS, probably Francis Springall, the pommel cap decorated with opposing profile busts and crowns, natural stag's horn grip, contained in its white metal mounted red leather wrapped wooden scabbard. Francis Springall operated at Three Legged Alley, circa 1690, scabbard mounts later replacements.

A WAKIZASHI, 57cm Shinto blade with one mekugi-ana, suguha hamon, nashiji hada, fully bound tsuka with shakudo fuchi-kashira decorated with grass seeds in soft metals, shakudo menuki in the form of buffalo, circular iron tsuba pierced and decorated in soft metals with vine leaves, faintly signed, in its speckled green aogai lacquered saya with large silver kojiri in the form of a crayfish, complete with a gilt kodzuka and kogai decorated with figures in a landscape, in silk sword bag. Sold with N.T.H.K. paper dated Nov 2008 attributing the blade to Kashu Kiyomitsu den.

A 9TH LANCER'S OFFICER'S MAMELUKE BY PROSSER, 80.5cm curved clipped back blade, double edge at the tip, etched with crowned crossed lances over IX over LANCERS, to either side, further etched with a maker's panel to either side PROSSER No. 9 Charing Cross LONDON, regulation gilt hilt, riveted two-piece ivory grips, contained in its stippled gilt mounted red velvet wrapped wooden scabbard with woven silver seam. Minor grey staining, one grip scale cracked.

A GEORGIAN SILVER MOUNTED CAVALRY OFFICER'S MAMELUKE, 83.5cm curved fullered blade, sharpened for use, characteristic silver hilt finely chiselled with scrolling foliage, crescents, acanthus scrolls and geometric forms, two-piece ebonised grips secured by ovoid foliate rivets, contained in its silver mounted red velvet wrapped wooden scabbard decorated to match. Silver hallmarks are for 1825 and maker's stamp of ID AD - John and Archibald Douglas.

A VERY RARE FIELD MARSHALL'S MAMELUKE TO THE FIRST BARON WILLIAM NICHOLSON GCB, 81.5cm clean curved blade with clipped back tip, etched with scrolling foliage, crowned GVR cypher and crowned crossed batons within a laurel wreath, all on a matt grey ground, stamped with the serial no. 04594 on the back edge, regulation gilt hilt incorporating crossed batons within a laurel wreath to either side, rosette riveted two-piece ivory grips, contained in its hallmarked silver scabbard, William Briggs & Co. London 1914. William Nicholson served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, Mahdist War, Third Anglo-Burmese War, Second Boer War and the First World War finishing with the rank of Field Marshal and was Chief of the Imperial General Staff. Since the establishment of the Rank of Field Marshal in 1736 there have only been 141 appointments.

A 1ST DURHAM VOLUNTEER RIFLE CORPS PRESENTATION SWORD, 82cm slightly curved blade profusely etched with scrolling foliage, stands of arms, oak leaves, laurel sprays, a figure of Victory, strung bugle horns, a crowned VR cypher and PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN THOMPSON BY THE EFFECTIVE MEMBERS OF THE FIRST DURHAM VOLUNTEER RIFLE CORPS AS A TOKEN OF THEIR ESTEEM AND REGARD AND IN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HIS ZEAL AND ENERGY IN PROMOTING THE WELFARE OF THE CORPS APRIL 1861, pierced and plated hilt decorated with scrolling foliage, oak leaves and laurel sprays, regimental devices and the arms of the city, silver wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its plated steel scabbard with pierced foliate mounts decorated to match, complete with silver bullion knot.

A 5TH KENT ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS PRESENTATION SWORD, 88cm blade finely etched, virtually to the tip, with panels of scrolling foliage, crowned Royal arms, crowned VR cypher, regimental motifs, owner's crest, initials and motto and the presentation inscription, PRESENTED TO MALCOLM B DE B BARNETT, ON HIS ATTAINING THE RANK OF MAJOR BY LIEUT. COLL. BRANDRAM, THE OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED PFFICERS AND GUNNERS OF THE 5TH KENT ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS, AS A TOKEN OF THEIR HIGH APPRECIATION OF HIS SERVICES, AND OF THEIR ESTEEM AND RESPECT FOR HIM. JUNE 1874, the cast silver hilt profusely pierced and decorated with scrolling foliage, flowerheads, crossed cannons, crowned Regimental title, owner's crest and surname, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its plated steel scabbard decorated with panels of scrolling foliage, owner's crest and motto. Malcolm B. de Berry Barnett was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on the 29th of October 1879.

Lot 496

A SILVER MOUNTED PRESENTATION BOWIE KNIFE, 24cm clipped back blade etched with scrolling foliage to either side, hallmarked silver mounted ivory hilt, Sheffield 1882 and maker's mark of JB, probably John Batt, contained in its silver mounted green leather sheath, the upper and lower mounts with rubbed Sheffield marks, the scabbard gilt embossed VR 1882 within a geometric border. Etched decoration rubbed. It is only supposition but in 1882 Queen Victoria survived an assassination attempt, the assailant, Roderick Maclean was subdued by two Eton school boys, Gordon Wilson and Leslie Murray Robertson, both of whom were publicly thanked by the Queen.
