Heenan on the other side, 11.5cm long. Thomas Sayers, also known as Tom Sayers (1826-1865), was a bare knuckle fighter, at a time when it was illegal and was only ever defeated once, losing to Nat Langham. At 5 feet 8 inches and 11 stone he was the first boxer to be declared World Heavyweight Champion. His most important victory was against the 185 pound Bill Perry (the Tipton Slaher) in ten rounds, on June 6th, 1857. . His fighting career lasted from 1849 until 1860, when a match billed as the contest for the `World Championship` against the American J.C.Heenan, ended in disarray. After 42 rounds (two hours), Sayers injured his right arm and the fight seemed to be going Heenan`s way, the crowd broke into the ring. The fight was declared a draw. An unprecedented public collection funded his comfortable retirement, but he died only five years later, aged 39. Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports
