A Victorian silver salver with beaded rim to the raised border, the leaf-scroll engraved centre with engraved inscription: “Presented To R.M. Ballantyne Esqr. By Miss E. M. Howe the Secretary & Miss M. Oliver the Treasurer of The Edinburgh Ladies Lifeboat Fund, In Fulfillment Of The Wishes of the Late Miss Eliott Lockhart, & in Acknowledgement of His Many Services Connected With The Edinburgh Working Men’s Life Boat, 1869”, on three claw-ball feet, 10” dia., London 1866 by Joseph & Edward Bradbury (16oz). Note: ROBERT MICHAEL BALLANTYNE (1820-1894) was a noted author and artist, & pursued an adventurous career with the Hudson Bay Company resulting in his 1856 novel “The Young Fur Traders”.
A Victorian Scottish silver Life-Saving medal inscribed “Presented By The Lord Provost & Magistrates of Edinburgh To Robert M. Ballantyne In Recognition of His Meritorious Services In Saving Life at the Disastrous Fire In The Canongate, October 9th 1867”, the reverse engraved with the Arms of the City of Edinburgh, makers mark: A.M. & Co.; together with a silver-plated tennis trophy beaker won by J.G. Ballantyne in 1900. THE CANONGATE FIRE: On the 9th October 1867, a fire broke out at the premises of fireworks maker Thomas Hammond in Chessels Court, Cannongate, resulting in five fatalities.
