By the early 1960s he had developed his own unique centrepiece bowl design, which was much shallower than the 20-30cm high centrepieces of previous generations. He produced these centrepieces in varying designs his career. The flat open work covers of Gerald's centrepieces are highly sculpted with a variety of abstract flowers and insects, or set with gemstones such as the lot being offered here. Literature: Andrew J. and Styles D. λ A PAIR OF SILVER GILT AND ENAMEL GOBLETSGERALD BENNEY, MASTER ENAMELLER'S MARK FOR ROBERT VIDAL WINTER, LONDON 1971 With green and red translucent enamel over a bark effect textured ground, ivory coloured stems and on circular feet13.5cm (5 1/4in) high769g (24.7 oz) grossLiterature: Andrew J. and Styles D. 'Designer British Silver from Studios Established 1930 -1985', Antique Collector's Club 2015, p 104 for an identical green and ivory enamelled goblet dated 1970. The authors note that this 1979 goblet was an early example of Benney's enamel work, and would have been extremely difficult to execute as the surface is both large and curved. Gerald Benney commented himself during their early enamel experiments that 'For two years great crates full of rubbish. The least speck of dust, or a tiny air bubble, can ruin enamel'. Condition Report: Marks are well struckStand wellEnamel goodLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and useCondition Report Disclaimer

A PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER SHAPED CIRCULAR SALVERSPHILIP RUNDELL, LONDON 1819With a chased shell and foliate border, engraved with rocaille, a later armorial and motto 'Touts jours prest', on four shell and grape vine feet24cm (9 1/2in) diameter1536g (49.4 oz) This is a full armorial achievement for Sir Richard SUTTON (1798-1855) 2nd Baronet of Norwood Park, Nottinghamshire, who was the son of John SUTTON (1770-1801) by Sophia Frances CHAPLIN. In 1819 he married Mary Elizabeth BURTON (1797-1842) the elder daughter of Benjamin BURTON of Burton Hall, co. Carlow Ireland and we would expect that the salvers, assayed in 1819, were created before his marriage as the SUTTON arms do not impale the arms of BURTON. When aged four years he succeeded his grandfather Sir Richard SUTTON (1733-1802), who in 1772 had been created 1st Baronet of Norwood Park.  The family were descended from the younger brother of Robert SUTTON (1594-1668), 1st Baron Lexinton of Aram. This title became extinct in 1723 on the death of Robert SUTTON (1662-1723) the 2nd Baron.  Condition Report: Marks clearArmorials lightly rubbedBoth badly wobbleLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and use The blazon:  argent, a canton sable. Crest: a wolf's head erased gules Motto: TOUTS JOURS PREST Condition Report Disclaimer

A PAIR OF GEORGE II SILVER SHAPED OVAL PLATTERSWILLIAM GRUNDY, LONDON 1750With gadrooned borders and engraved with an armorial34cm (13 1/2in) long1837g (59.05 oz)Provenance: The Property of the Trustees of the Davenport Estate  The arms for LEICESTER of Westbury. A record of an exact match for the armorial can be found in Papworth Ordinary of Arms. This identifies the owner of the arms as LEICESTER of Westbury, Salop with an unknown quartering. The arms include the mark of a baronet applied to the quartering. The LEICESTER baronets are of Tabley, Cheshire and reference to their heraldic records show the paternal arms differ in that the fess is tinctured gules and not or as is the case of the engraving to this piece. This disparity may be the result of an error in engraving or may be an applied difference created by the holder, a descendant the LEICESTER family. Notably the baronetcy ends in 1826 when the LEICESTER family become barons Tabley. In 1792 at the time of the assay Sir John Fleming LEICESTER (1762-1827) is the 5th Baronet and the son an heir of Sir Peter LEICESTER (1732-1770), 4th Baronet by Catherine FLEMING, youngest daughter and co-heir of Sir William FLEMING 1st Baronet of Rydall, Westmoreland. The blazon of arms for FLEMING is recorded as gules, a fret argent but despite this disparity it is expected that quarterly in your image refers to LEICESTER-FLEMING marriage and inheritance and the item was commissioned by the 5th Baronet. AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY CONVERTIBLE DIAMOND FLORAL TIARA/NECKLACE CIRCA 1910With seven graduated old mine cut diamond set gold backed silver flower heads, with screw fittings verso, one later, with rose cut and mine cut diamond set foliate links, with a diamond set foliate band below, approximately 12 carats total, with removable tiara frame, the bottom band with a clasp so the two sections can be made into a necklace, with additional brooch and earring fittings, with a fitted Carrington & Co. caseSize/dimensions: the rise of the tiara is 4.7cm high, necklace is 37cm long Gross weight: tiara 57.3 gramsProvenanceThe tiara was made by Carrington in London for Phyllis Elinor Turner (1893-1958) for her presentation at court, possibly at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, before her marriage to Gilbert Maxwell Adair Graham on the 19th June 1913. Phyllis and her brother Arthur Turner were born, brought up, and lived their lives in Porto, amongst the 1000 strong Anglo-Portuguese community. She worked tirelessly for poor relief charities in the Douro Valley and was made a Dame of the Order of Christ of Portugal for her charitable work. During World War I Gilbert Maxwell Adair Graham was on the Staff of the Quartermaster General Department at the War Office and received an OBE 1918 and a CBE in 1919. Gilbert's Scottish family had long trading links with Portugal starting in the late 18th century. Their introduction to the port business came in 1820 when John Graham exported 27 barrels of port to Glasgow in lieu of an unpaid debt. By the 1880s the Graham family's port trading was so successful they launched the W. & J. Graham port business. The Graham family purchased their own Portuguese estates in 1890, the Quinta dos Malvados vineyards in the Douro Valley, in order to produce their own port grapes. After many successful years in the port trade, the Graham family sold their remaining share of the W. & J. Graham business in 1970. In subsequent decades decedents of the Graham family have brought other vineyards Douro Valley and have set up a new successful port business with their brand, Churchill's Port.Thence by family descentCondition Report: The principal diamonds are approximately 0.80 carats each, however the depth of the diamonds cannot be measured due to the settings. One of the second largest flower heads to the side of the central flower is a later replacement cast from the other remaining original, the replacement is only noticeable due to the difference in the setting seen from the reverse. The replacement flower head is slightly smaller than the original it was cast from. The two smallest flower heads may have come from an earlier tiara, there is some lead solder behind these two smallest flowers which had been used to fix them in place to the ear stud fittings. There are no other signs of repair to the main gold backed silver tiara/necklace mount. The flower heads measure 13.5mm (smallest), 15mm, 26.1mm (replacement flower head), 27.1mm (original flower head) and 29mm (largest). The diamonds are all present with no obvious replacements, they are mixed clarity (mostly VS - SI, with inclusions visible in some with a 10X loupe); they are also slightly mixed in colour H-K, with some showing slight tinged colour). The nickel tiara frame has had numerous repairs with lead solder patches. The original tightening screws at the side of the frame have been lead soldered into a fixed position. As is common with gold backed silver mounted jewellery of this period, there are no hallmarks or makers marks on the mount.
