A GEORGE II SILVER SHAPED CIRCULAR SALVER EDWARD FELINE, LONDON 1736 With a raised moulded border, engraved with a shell and scroll band, and an armorial, on three scroll feet 26cm (10 1/4in) diameter 812g (26.1 oz) These are the marshalled arms of George GREGORY (1697-1758) lately of Harlaxton Manor, Lincolnshire and his wife Anne ORTON (1713-1785) of Whitechapel Middlesex. They were married in 1736 at Harlaxton. This is likely to be a marriage piece. George GREGORY was the son and heir of George GREGORY (1669-1746) of Nottingham by Susanna WILLIAMS (1671-1755) the daughter of William WILLIAMS and Elizabeth KENRICK also of Nottingham. Records obtained from existing pedigrees indicate that George GREGORY junior took possession of the considerable manor at Harlaxton, which had been in the possession of his wife, on his marriage. He was born at Nottingham. Notably his first son and heir George de Ligne GREGORY (1740-1822) inherited the manor on his father's death in 1758. From 1619 the de LIGNE family had held the manor of Harlaxton, the manor house there having been previously a royal hunting lodge. It was at that time that Sir Daniel de LIGNE was granted arms in England, with the arms being that previously held by the House de Ligne from Hainault in Belgium with the addition of the chief chequy argent and azure as an augmentation. The family were identified as princes in Belgium.  Anne ORTON is the daughter of John ORTON and Elizabeth TYRWHIT of Whitechapel, Middlesex and was a lady of considerable wealth holding, before her marriage, both the Harlaxton manor and a further manor in Suffolk. Her connection to the de LIGNE family is unclear, but the ORTON family did quarter their own assumed arms with those of de LIGNE of Harlaxton. Notably the memorial to their son George de Ligne GREGORY includes only the arms of GREGORY emparlée de LIGNE.   Condition Report: Maker's mark partially obscured, rest are clearStands wellEngraving clearLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and useCondition Report Disclaimer
