Notes: Pte Hudson’s medal index card states he disembarked for service on November 11th 1914, but makes no mention of any entitlement to the clasp for the star. He is also entitled to the Silver War Badge (badge number 82664), on account of sickness. Sidney was born in 1880 in Birmingham, and was discharged in April 1915. Condition: generally good. Some age related toning to the medals, and wear from polishing to the British War Medal. The ribbons are a little grubby in places, but nevertheless original to the medals.

And, a black grade badge, marked ‘103’ to the back in raised numbers for the rare marker of August G.Tam of Gablonz. This black grade example is also additionally scratch marked ‘Dave Bell’ right below the hinge, which is believed to be the veteran that acquired it. Condition: generally solid. Some expected expected wear to the silvered finishes on 2 of the 3 examples. The L/57 mark to the reverse of the Boerger & Co example is faint, but readable. The black grade example has lost much of its painted finish to the front, revealing a more gun metal colour. The black is more apparent to the reverse side. The black grade wound badge is also missing its C clasp.

Lot 17

A good Victorian campaign / Special Constabulary medal group, awarded to 1120 Pte John Saxe of the Royal Sussex Regiment. To include: the Egypt Medal with clasp for The Nile 1884-85 (with engraved naming), the India General Service Medal with clasp for Hazara 1888 (engraved in running script), the Khedives Star, unnamed as issued and dated 1884-6, a WW1 era Special Constabulary Long Service Medal with Great War sew on clasp. Plus, a pin on ribbon bar, featuring the ribbons for the Egypt, India, and Khedives medals, a WW2 era marksmanship award medallion, and 1967 dated safe driving medal. Notes: Pte Saxe was part of the 1st Battalion Royal Sussex regiment when he was awarded his Egypt medal, but was part of the 2nd Battalion when he received his India General Service Medal. He would have participated in the Black Mountain Expedition, against the tribes of Kala Dhaka, in what is now modern day Pakistan. The Special Constabulary Medal is named to a John Saxe, but it can’t be stated with 100% certainty that this is the same person. It’s entirely feasible that it could be the same John, as he only would have been in his 50’s at the time of the Great War. The award of the Egypt and India medals are both confirmed on the respective rolls. Condition: generally good. The silver medals are heavily toned, and would appear to have not been cleaned for some time. Both the silver medals have contact marks from wear, plus evidence of abrasive cleaners being used in the past. The Egypt medal has an edge bruise at the 6 o’clock position. The running script naming to the India medal has worn to the area around his rank and service number, with the latter virtually obliterated. The swivel suspension to the Egypt medal is tight, but the India medal has some slackness (but is still secure). The Khedives star is minus its ribbon, but is in good condition. The Special Constabulary medal and clasp are in good condition, but the clasp would appear to have never been sewn on to the ribbon.

Condition: generally good. Many of the badges show service and age related wear, with some having old ingrained polish. The Australian badge has a loop missing to the reverse, and appears quite oxidised (possibly buried at some point?) All of the other badges retain their loops or sliders to the reverse side.

Lot 10

A WW1 1914 Star trio, and cap badge, awarded to 13260 Pte Ernest Bidmead of the South Wales Borderers. Both cap badges included with the medals would appear to be of WW2 era manufacture. Condition: good. Some age related toning to each of the medals, but they don’t appear to have been over polished in the past. Each medal is complete with a modern replacement ribbon.

Photograph size 9.7cm x 7.2cm size including signature panel 12cm x 7.2cm. Condition: generally good. The photograph appears to have been cut down slightly, and this is more noticeable to the right hand margin, and slightly less to the left. Small crease to the signature panel on the bottom left, and an extremely faint score line to the photograph to the left side, but this is almost unseen unless under magnification. Small semi-circle lighter patch on bottom margin of signature panel, which cuts slight into the bottom loop of one of the written letters.

Lot 73

A WW1 era sterling silver English Lever pocket watch, by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd London, as issued to the Royal Artillery. Hallmarked to the inside of the casing for London 1916, with the makers mark of R&S for Rotherham & Sons. 15 Jewel movement, engraved ‘Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd’. Hinged back cover, engraved with a broad arrow mark ‘R.A’, and the serial number 30191 K. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, and subsidiary dial at the 6 o’clock position. The crown is hallmarked with a different date letter, with it appearing to be a Birmingham letter q for 1915, which may suggest a period repair. The watch measures approximately 4.7cm wide across the face. Condition: cosmetically good. Normal light marks to the casing from service wear, plus clean dial and hands. The lever mechanism for setting the time appears to work as it should, and the watch seems to run well when wound, but this is by no means a guarantee of its timekeeping. Lot 114

An unusual WW2 era R.A.F related sterling silver napkin ring, apparently gifted by a Flight Lieutenant August van Rossum to ‘One of the women of Britain’. There was possibly more than one issued, as this example is named in a different font style to a ‘H.Perkins’. The full inscription reads: ‘To one of the women of Britain who fighting on the home front in support of those in battle, made victory possible. World War II, London 1945’. There is then a facsimile signature of van Rossum, with his rank of ‘Flight Lieutenant of the Royal Air Force’. The item is fully hallmarked for London 1945. A second identically sized plain silver plated napkin ring is also included. Notes: August van Rossum (1916-1989) was a Dutch pilot serving in the R.A.F during WW2. He is noted as being the first pilot to sink a German U-boat by means of conventional bombs while flying with 502 Squadron. The feat took place during the summer of 1943, when while flying his Handley Page Halifax bomber over the Atlantic, 3 German U-boats were discovered. During a fly past, van Rossum managed to sink one of the U-boats, and create a near miss on another. Later in the war he became head of the Airforce Information Service, based in London, before leaving the service in 1945. Condition: generally good. Some light marks to the silver from use, but nothing to its detriment.

Lot 31

A WW1 1914 star trio, with sewn on clasp and silver war badge. Awarded to 2799 Dvr Edwin Arthur Fern of the 34th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. To include: the 1914 Star, with original period sewn on ‘Mons’ clasp, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, the Silver War Badge (numbered B61383), and an unused set of WW1 trio silk medal ribbons. Notes: Edwin Arthur Fern first attested for service on December 28th 1899, aged 18 and half. A native of Burton-on-Trent, his civilian occupation was noted as being a baker on his service records. He would appear to have spent the majority of his career on home service, and was based there from 1899 through until 1914, when he was deployed to France (16/08/14). Edwin served until December 9th 1918, when he was discharged under paragraph 392, as being no longer physically fit for war service (sickness). The award of the clasp for his 1914 Star is confirmed, as is the award of his Silver War Badge. Condition: generally good. The medal trio are mounted for wear on a pin back bar. They are toned with age and show some signs of polishing, but a good level of detail remains. The Silver War Badge is also toned with age, but in good condition, and has a working pin and clasp. The spare ribbons are virtually mint condition, and would appear to have never been used.

Lot 18

A 1914 Star and clasp trio, awarded to 3070 Pte / Cpl Edward Winter of the 2/Rifle Brigade. To include: the 1914 Star and sew on clasp (the clasp being a later reproduction), the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: there appears to have been an administrative error on Cpl Winter’s medal index card. His 1914 Star uses the initial A, with the other 2 medals using the correct letter E for Edward. His MIC even states ‘see A Winter’ His entitlement to the clasp is confirm, and it also confirms his entitlement to the silver war badge. Cpl Winter first entered the conflict on November 7th 1914 as part of the 2/Rifle Brigade, and later transferred to the Labour Corps. Condition: generally good. Age related toning to each of the medals, but a good level of detail remains to each. Each medal is complete with later replacement ribbons.

Approximately 2.5cm x 1.8cm. Condition: generally good. The red enamel infill to the central cross has a slither of enamel missing to the surface, but this can’t only be noticed under magnification. All diamonds appear to be present to the front side. Working pin and roll over clasp on the reverse, plus a little loss of gilding to the back panel.

A silver WW2 style German SS rune ring. A well made and heavyweight piece, with a think shank, and front face depicting the Schutzstaffel lightning runes.
