A fascinating Royal Service group of medals awarded to Harry Payne, the Chauffeur to His Majesty King Edward VII and after the Kings death the head Chauffeur to HM Queen Alexandra comprising:- Royal Victorian medal (King George V) in case of issue, Victorian Metropolitan Police Diamond Jubilee 1897 medal and King Edward VII Metropolitan Coronation 1902 medal (both named PCH Payne) Victorian Volunteer Force long service medal (named Lce Corp H Payne 1st VB Worc Reg), King George V Coronation and King George V Silver Jubilee, Danish medal in case (7) Sold with Harry Payne`s driving licences for 1904 and 1905, a handwritten note from HM Queen Alexandra and letters of provenance and research. Harry Payne was born 11th March 1875. He joined the Metropolitan Police in 1896 and in 1905 was put on special duties as chauffeur to His Majesty The King. His driving skills were much admired by the King and he often drove the King on Continental trips. Payne was promoted to a Police Sargeant in 1909 and continued as head chauffeur to the Queen until her death in 1925. He died in 1960.

On hearing of her birth the Queen asked to be the child`s Godmother - a great compliment to her Page who not surprisingly agreed and quickly included the Queen`s name in his daughter`s forenames).
