A 19TH CENTURY FRENCH SILVER GILT SNUFF BOX of rectangular form, the hinged mother of pearl set cover carved in relief with Daniel in the lion's den, the interior inscribed 'Edward Hooper, Lessee of the Saint James Theatre, to Mr George Wombwell in token of his courageous conduct in the management of his forest of wild animals', in fitted case, 10.2cm x 5cm x 3.3cm Mr Wombwell established a travelling menagerie in 1805 which appeared annually in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. Mr Wombwell travelled with his menagerie until in his death in 1850, whereafter his animals and accessories were auctioned off at the Pavilion, Waverley Market.
