* Kirk (William Umpleby). A group of six mounted vintage gelatin silver prints of yachts, c. 1909-14, including the 12 metre yachts Cintra and Alachie racing in the Solent, plus five images of individual yachts sailing in the Solent, Lamorna, Moowina, Celia, Carina and Shamrock, all but last photo with names of yachts and `Kirks, Cowes copy` inscribed in white to lower margins of images, all with royal appointment stamps to mounts and versos, a little speckling to images and sl. soiling and marks to mounts, images all approx. 15 x 10cm or the reverse. William Umpleby Kirk (1844-1928) came down from Hull to open a studio in Cowes High Street. He took one of the first photographs of a vessel in motion, the Royal yacht Alberta which so impressed Queen Victoria that he was given a royal appointment. (6)
