Naval History -- Two souvenir albums of Corvetten Capitain Adolph Wilhelm Berger (1829-1898). 1866/1880s. First album (1866) with circa 173 mounted albumen prints. Various sizes, including 161 cdv size, 5 cabinet card size and 7 circa 20 x 27 cm albumen prints (each annotated with full name, military rank and date), mounted to album pages (buckled, slightly soiled/time-stained in edges), bound in modern half leather album with gilt-stamped title Corvetten Capitain Berger 1866, front fly leaf signed and dated by Adolph Berger in ink. Second album (1880s) with circa 92 albumen prints, most cdv, including 7 cabinet portraits, inserted in gilt-edged window album mats, most annotated in pencil below image on the mount, hand-painted dedication title page, full leather album with silver maritime ornaments on front cover, with clasp. These comprehensive albums are comprised of many portraits of Naval officers and large group portraits of ship crews on deck of SMS Niobe and the ironclad warship Hansa. These photographs from the 1860s-1880s are extremely rare documents of German naval history. German photos of this kind were rare even then and only a few have survived. The albums offered here include nearly every officer and official who held rank in the Prussian and Imperial Navy. They are all connected in some way with Adolph Berger's career as an officer. Of particular interest is a portrait photograph of James Madison Adams (1826-1870). Adams was a Chief Engineer in the US Navy and came to Kiel in 1866 on the USS "Augusta." The USS "Augusta" was one of two escort ships of the monitor USS "Miantonomoh" built for the United States Navy while the American Civil War was still in progress. After the end of the Civil War, US President Andrew Johnson sent the ship on a voyage across the North Atlantic in May 1866 to conduct a "showing the flag mission" in Europe. The spectacular armored ship was a great sensation wherever it appeared. Coming from St. Petersburg, the USS "Augusta" and the USS "Miantonomoh" entered the harbor of Kiel on 29.09.1866, where among others the photo of James M. Adams was taken. The portraits of English officers of the S.M.S. "Black Prince" in one of the albums are also rare and interesting. A very extensive documentation and list of names is included with the albums. For a more detailed biography of Adolph Berger, see previous lot 4049. – Some photos faded, some photos cut out, a few with light spots, otherwise most in good condition.

I was surrounded by horrendous noise, Russians and Germans were all shouting in horrible confusion ... A pleasant young soldier came up to me. I had a red flag in my hand. He said, 'Lieutenant, davai, let's hurry up and climb onto the roof with the flag' ... We started out, but all the stairs were badly damaged. When we finally got up the Reichstag was on fire. ...We found a long pole. I spent lots of time trying out different compositions. I took one picture from the left, but that wasn't any good. I wanted Berlin to be clearly visible in the picture. Then I said, 'Boys, go and stand over there and raise the flag ... then try over there'. There were three of them. One was from the Ukraine, the other from Machatshkala in Dagestan and the third was a Russian. ... I shot a whole roll of film, 36 shots." Photographer's and reproduction limitation blindstamp in lower left/right corners, mounted to original board (corners bumped, small loss in upper left corner), with title and date printed above/below the image on the mount (41,5 x 31,5 cm).The Shroud of Turin is believed to bear the imprint of the face and wounds of Christ. The first historical record of the Shroud goes back to the 15th century when it was given to the House of Savoy by a French noblewoman. Since the 17th century, it has been housed in a chapel connected to Turin’s cathedral. The first photograph of the Shroud was made during its public display in 1898 by the amateur photographer Secondo Pia. Because that photograph was produced with the Shroud under its protective glass, its use as evidence was increasingly questioned. Thus, when the Shroud was displayed publicly in 1931, in honor of the wedding of Umberto II to the Belgian princess Maria José, a new set of photographs was commissioned.Accompanied by a French scientist, a priest and Secondo Pia, Enrie made twelve negatives of the Shroud. He recorded his methodology in great detail, which was published in 1933. Enrie’s photographs of the Shroud were widely distributed. The print offered here includes its original mount, which features printed signatures and insignia of church officials, attesting to the official sanction of the image. – A few scuff/scratch marks in upper left as well as light silvering in edges, more visible at an angle, one stronger dent to left of face, retouched spot in upper right corner, otherwise in very good condition.Lit.: Maria Bugli/Cristina Gardini.
