Small crack in flan, otherwise extremely fine and unpublished. (2)

INDIAN, SULTANATES Sultans of Dehli, Mahmud bin Muhammad bin Tughluq (AH 752 / 1351 AD), Gold Tanka, AH 752, 11.04g (G&G D455). Very fine, a little crimped, scarce. When Muhammad bin Tughluq died after a reign of some 27 years, his army, on campaign in Sind, accepted Firuz Tughluq as his successor. Unaware of this, the nobles in Dehli raised to the throne a would-be son of the late ruler, by the name of Mahmud. When Firuz returned to the capital not long afterwards, Mahmud was set aside. Coins are known struck in his name in gold, silver and billon. The silver and billon coins are extremely rare, while the gold coins are scarce.
