A Mamluk Revival silver inlaid brass Qur'an box (Sunduq), 19th century, probably Damascus, of square form, raised on four flattened round feet, with coffered cover decorated throughout with panels of thuluth and kufic within floral and foliate arabesques and scrolls, the reinforcing panels along the leading edges attached through applied pins, the interior lined with carved wooden panels with central inscription cartouche and floral arabesques, lacking latch but generally good overall condition. 22cm by 31cm square Note: the lid bears the Mamluk honorific "Glory to our Lord the Sultan the King" in floriated Kufic script, the front, back and side panels decorated with verse 255 of Chapter 2 of the Qur'an in thuluth calligraphy, the base panel to the interior carved with an Ottoman tughra and a circle containing the word Sham in Arabic.
