A PAIR OF EARLY 19TH-CENTURY COURT DRESS EPAULETTES FOR VICE ADMIRAL GOSSELIN, silver lace with bullions secured around a rigid bonnet trimmed in red silk and Morocco, eyelets for coat ties and maker's labels for Moore (late Bicknells & Moore) Old Bond Street., contained within red card box of issue, inscribed underneath Vice Admiral Gosselin / From William McGee/43 Conduit Street, 10in. (25.5cm.) diameter (box), Thomas Le Merchant Gosselin (1765-1857) born at St. Peter Port, Guernsey, entered the navy in 1778 and enjoyed an interesting naval career: Captured and released by enemy forces and present at some of the most interesting actions of the period, most notably The Battle of the Saintes, 12 April 1782, the Battle of the Glorious First of June, 1794 and the capture of Surinam in 1799. Marrying in 1809 he had no further career at sea, but became a rear-admiral in 1814, a vice admiral in 1815 and a full admiral in 1841. A similar pair of epaulettes, owned by Sir John Franklin, can be viewed in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

A Georgian naval officer's sword c 1775, straight fullered blade 25", with back fuller, gilt straight stirrup hilt, the outer bars of the slotted guard incorporating fouled anchor, fluted knucklebow with pierced panel and fouled anchor, fluted acorn pommel, silver wirebound grip, in a later leather scabbard with line engraved gilt mounts and 2 hanging rings. Good Condition for age, the hilt retaining approximately 50% original gilt (hilt a little loose). Plate 27

Quarter stocked, engraved lock and steel trigger guard with elaborately shaped bow and finial. Chequered pistol grip and fore. Good Working Order and Condition, (some light pitting to barrel and mounts). Plate 32

A pair of German 34 bore percussion target pistols by Bartolomaeus Joseph Kuchenreuter of Regensburg, c. 1860, 16" overall, very slightly flared rifled octagonal barrels 11", the top flats inlaid in silver "BARTH: IOS: KUCHENREUTER", the breeches which are numbered 1 and 2, have twin nipple bolsters, and the sideplates mirror the shape of the lock plates, presumably to facilitate the fitting of either right hand or left hand locks, adjustable rearsights on the breech tangs, the locks and sideplates with scroll engraved decoration, the former with "In Regensburg" within scrolls; walnut halfstocks with fluted butts; single set triggers, plain German silver mounts including spurred trigger guards. Good Working Order and Condition (old rivetted repair to one trigger guard). Plate 33

A good officer's 22 bore percussion belt pistol, by Burnett, Southampton, 13" overall, browned octagonal twist barrel 7" with maker's name on top flat; finely scroll engraved lock and hammer, with maker's name; varnished walnut fullstock with finely chequered butt, and with German silver barrel wedge plates and vacant escutcheon; steel mounts including scroll engraved spurred trigger guard, engraved butt cap with trap, and belt hook on left side, swivel ramrod. Good Working Order and Clean Conditon, retaining most original finish. Plate 33

An American double barrelled .380" over 16 bore "mule ear" percussion rifle/gun, 44" overall, round barrels 27¾", the upper barrel fitted with ratchet type rearsight and with ramrod pipes on either side; simple back action lock engraved with scrolls and stamped "C.Thompson" , the two hammers emanating from a single opening in the plate and apparently operating simultaneously from the single trigger, nicely figured walnut plains type butt with German silver mounts including scrolled and spurred trigger guard, deeply crooked butt plate and small butt trap. Good Working Order and Condition (signs of repairs to hammer spurs); in their original green baize lined fitted mahogany case, the lid escutcheon with flush folding handle, engraved "Charles Pearson Esq. 4th Dragoon Guards", the lid with trade card of James Wilkinson & Son, 27 Pall Mall, London, containing plain copper flask, 13½ bore steel pincer mould, stout brass mounted ebony cleaning rod, Joyce cap tin, and pewter oil bottle. A fine cased pair of 38 bore percussion duelling pistols by Joseph Manton, number 4643, originally flintlocks of 1808, 15" overall, heavy octagonal browned barrels 10" with new breeches fitted at the time of conversion, the engraved breech tangs incorporating rearsights, flat detented locks with safety bolts and typical flat sided hammers, engraved with fern tip borders, scrolls and "Joseph Manton London"; walnut halfstocks with horn fore end caps, silver barrel wedge plates and silver escutcheons engraved with crest; mirror blued steel mounts, the trigger guards with pineapple finials, the bows engtraved with trophies of arms and serial number; horn tipped wooden ramrods. Near Very Good Working Order and Condition, the metalwork retaining much original finish, (one trigger guard slightly mis-shaped); in their original green baize lined fitted mahogany case, wtih flush folding handle in the lid and central escutcheon engraved with the same crest as on the pistols, containing 3 way leather covered brass flask, ebony loading/cleaning rod, leather faced mallet with detachable handle, steel pincer mould numbered to the pistols, octagonal steel oil bottle, chamois leather bag of bullets, and key to the case. Good Condition (old repair to inside of the lid, central compartment re-covered). These pistols are listed in "The Manton Supplement" by Neal and Back, page 230. Plate 41

A good cased 6 shot 54 bore self cocking bar hammer percussion pepperbox revolver by Cogswell, 8½" overall, barrels 3½" with London proofs, scroll engraved frame, hammer and trigger guard, the top strap engraved "Cogswell, 224 Strand, London", finely chequered bag shaped walnut butt with vacant rectangular German silver escutcheon. Good Working Order and Condition, the engraving crisp, retaining some original colour hardened finish to frame; in its original purple velvet lined fitted mahogany case with brass escutcheon to the lid, containing a good 3 way copper flask by Sykes, 60 bore steel pincer mould, loading rod and turnscrew, wad punch and a cap tin. A fine and extremely rare cased pair of 36 bore flintlock duelling pistols, by James Purdey, 4 Princes Street, Leicester Square, London, numbers 764 and 765, circa 1820; 15½" overall, heavy browned octagonal twist barrels 10", the recessed breeches with platinum touch holes, single lines and "Purdey, London"poincons, the top flats engraved "I. PURDEY, PRINCES STREET, LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON" the rearsights incorporated in the mirror engraved breech tangs; flat locks with ring neck cocks, deep rain proof pans, rollers on frizzen springs and safety bolts, the plates engraved with toothed borders and scrolls and signed "PURDEY"; nicely figured walnut halfstocks with chequered bag shaped butts and silver fore end caps, barrel wedge plates and vacant rectangular escutcheons; steel mounts including finely engraved trigger guards with stylised pineapple finials, retaining traces of original blued finish; brass mounted wooden ramrods, each with powder measure and concealed worm. Very Good Working Order and Generally Crisp Condition; contained in their green baize lined fitted mahogany case, the lid with flush fitting circular brass carrying handle and central circular escutcheon, Purdey's trade card in the lid with Princes' Street address and "From J. Manton's"; containing hickory mallet/loading rod with 2 interchangeable brass jags, steel 40 bore pincer mould, wooden handled turnscrew, steel patch punch and circular brass patch box, mainspring cramp, pewter oil bottle, stiff pan brush with hard wood handle, and key to the case. The whole in clean condition (keyhole escutcheon missing). Plates 45 and front cover Note: These pistols are reputed to have originally been sold to a Captain Miller, but no other early history is known. They were formerly in the Collection of Clay P. Bedford of Arizona and were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, appearing on pages 78 and 79 of the catalogue "Early Firearms of Great Britain and Ireland" published in 1971. They are also listed and described in Patrick Unsworth's "The Early Purdeys", in which he lists only 3 known pairs of Purdey flintlock duelling pistols, one of which was in the W. Keith Neal Collection, sold in November 2005.
