The ‘Dawn Patrol’ that occurred…..at Night! BISHOP W. A. BILLY: (1894-1956) Canadian Air Marshal, a flying ace of World War I credited with 72 victories and thus the top Canadian and British Empire ace of the war. Victoria Cross winner for his aerial actions during an attack on a German aerodrome on 2nd June 1917 during World War I. D.S., W. A. Bishop, as Commander of 85 Squadron, one page, 4to, n.p. (France), 16th June 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to two aerial victories achieved by Bishop in his SE5A (C1904) biplane fighter, the narrative stating, in full, 'At 8-20 p.m. 1,8000 feet 5 miles East of Armentieres. I chased a two-seater from our side of the lines climbing up to him finally getting to 100 yards range fired 20 rounds from each gun. E[nemy]. A[ircraft]. smoked then burst into flames and fell. At 8-28 p.m. 8,000 feet, over Armentieres. 4 Albatross scouts attacked me from the sun and head on continued their dive to 4,000 feet below me. I watched for a few minutes and dived onto rear one, opened fire at 75 yards from behind and in the sun. E.A. went down vertically and crashed on western edge of Armentieres. E.A. dived to below me I think owing to presence of one of our formations 3 or 4 thousand feet above.' Matted in black alongside a colour 6 x 4 postcard reproduction of Robert Taylor's painting (erroneously) entitled The Dawn Patrol with printed text relating to the artwork stating, in part, 'On 16th June 1918 Major W. A. (Billy) Bishop VC took off at dawn on a patrol in search of enemy aircraft. Climbing his flight of SE5A's to 8000 feet above Armentieres, Northern France, he located and destroyed one enemy aircraft and followed this some eight minutes later by destroying a second……Robert Taylor's new painting “The Dawn Patrol” portrays Billy Bishop and the pilots of 85 Squadron as they climb their SE5A fighters into the cool morning sunlight above the fields of Northern France'. Framed and glazed in a decorative silver coloured frame to an overall size of 20 x 18. Some light discoloration to the edges of the document and minor age wear. Together with a colour 31.5 x 24 limited edition print of The Dawn Patrol by artist Robert Taylor, the image depicting Bishop in flight in his SE5A (C1904) biplane fighter in the sunlit clouds over Armentieres, accompanied by two other pilots of 85 Squadron. Published by the Military Gallery of Bath in 1988 and signed to the lower margin in bold pencil by the artist Robert Taylor (also numbered 785 of 1000) and the pilots Gwilym Hugh Lewis (1897-1996) British Wing Commander, a flying ace of World War I credited with 12 victories, and Robert Chidlaw-Roberts (1896-1989) British Flight Lieutenant, a flying ace of World War I credited with ten victories. Rolled and with one minor surface crease. A remarkable pair of signed items. G to VG, 2Robert Taylor's excellent painting The Dawn Patrol would appear to have been meticulously researched; the artist and publishers taking note of the correct aircraft and serial number Bishop was flying, as well as the correct altitude, location and date of the ace's flight on 16th June 1918. However, Taylor, widely regarded as the world's premier painter of aviation subjects, made two mistakes in The Dawn Patrol, as clearly confirmed by Bishop's Combat Report - firstly, Bishop was flying alone and, most importantly, the combat occurred at night, at 8.20 pm and 8,28 pm, and not at dawn.

ROTHSCHILD NATHAN MEYER: (1777-1836) Jewish German banker, businessman and financier, one of the second generation of the Rothschild banking dynasty. D.S., N M Rothschild, in his capacity as contractor, in the right margin, two pages, folio, n.p. (London?), 1st March 1822. The printed document, in Russian, French and English, is a financial certificate 'of a perpetual Annuity in the Great Book of the Public Debt of the Imperial Commission of the Sinking Fund, representing a Capital of Seven Hundred and Twenty Silver Roubles…', equal to £111. With various decorative engravings to either side and a number of official stamps, as well as one of the original coupons lightly affixed at the base. Some light overall age wear and some two lengthy, neat splits at the edge of the central horizontal fold, G The present Russian bond of 1822 is widely recognized by Economic historians as being the first Eurobond. Issued by the House of Rothschild in London, Frankfurt, Paris and Vienna, the bond promised payment in European currencies, as well as in Russian roubles. Perhaps more importantly, dividends could be claimed in any of the aforementioned cities, effectively protecting the bondholder from the effects of a continental war. Although titled an annuity, the 1822 issue was in fact a perpetuity, a promise by Russia to pay a dividend to the bondholder forever, or at least until the Revolution of 1917.

Having survived two near fatal air crashes in Africa, Hemingway asserts –‘….tell the boys nothing is bad if you say to it go fuck yourself’  HEMINGWAY ERNEST: (1899-1961) American novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1954. An excellent A.L.S., Papa, two pages, (separate leaves), 4to, Gritti Palace Hotel, Venice, 8th April 1954, to Leonard Lyons ('Dear Lenny'). Hemingway writes a detailed letter, just a few months after having been almost fatally injured in two successive plane crashes with his wife, 'Miss Mary is fine now. Her ribs ok. She was banged worse than she knew but she is very brave and has the guts of a badger. After a proper examination they found I bought it pretty thoroly (sic) Full concussion; loss sight left eye (optic nerve is regenerating ok) loss hearing left ear, ruptured right kidney, ditto liver and spleen, intestines collapsed, paralysis of sphincter etc. couldn't shit for 22 days then I had 62 movements (complete with cramps in 20 hours) all standing up. If sit down lower intestine comes out…..was urinating kidney cells that looked sort of like black quill tooth picks. Only semi soft. So will skip the atrocities. But tell the boys nothing is bad if you say to it go fuck yourself', adding that he would have appreciated joking with Lyons ('Lenny you get very fond of your friends when you are up shit creek'), continuing with a further account of his recent misfortunes, this time during a fishing expedition undertaken in February, '….Ray [Marsh, his pilot] and [I] land on a beach with the Cessna. This is a little show boat but a little bit good too. So what happens? It is very dry again and wind force 7 and I am in bed and a bush fire starts right behind the camp and will burn out a place……so we have to turn it and try to canalize it. You know that is very rough with primitive methods. But the system is the same. So I get 2nd degree burns on legs, abdomen, chest and mouth. Had burned on left hand and right forearm. You can see the tendons and the bone. We keep this out of the papers on acct no reporters……and we don't have to make a report because we win. But everything breaks loose inside again and everyone is judging how we do on the burns by how I smell. Patrick [Hemingway's son] has shoved back to Tanganyika. Young Denis, my partner has an attack of amoebic and can't move, Miss Mary is crazy as a goat but doesn't know it. It is a magnificent situation. So Miss Mary takes the safari to Mombassa (sic). At this time she is in her watch buying epoch and she gives a watch to every game scout and gun bearer that is worth more than they make in a year. They are all in love with her anyway and she doesn't have to give watches. But she has just pranged in a couple of kites and burned in one and watches are the smallest things she can think of. She starts with Omegas and goes through the Rolex Oyster perpetuals', and also writing of his passage to Europe and future travel plans, 'I bring the chartered ship back….in to the old anchorage at Fort Jesus (very easy) and stay aboard 4 days while we wait for the Lloyd Triestino boat. It is very pleasant in the old harbour. Never thought would make Venice but made it OK. All wounds healed good and sound. Here there exists always certain problems. Fine, beautiful, lovely problems. Tomorrow we go to the country. Then Paris to pick up a couple of clothes and bet 6 horses. Then to Spain to try to get in shape. Very good RAF doctor told me I could live 2 months if I kept my mind on it. Could live 2 years if I made it a career. We figure to beat him by ten. But lost so much blood, internal, that must pace myself and so will skip NY and come straight home. Tell Toots and the mob that will come up quiet, I don't want to see some jerk like Billy Rose when I still have a concussion and think you can use the portable gallows. The objectives now are Paris, Madrid, Santiago de Compostella (sic) and the Finca [Vigia] and Black Dog…..Read this letter to Toots would you mind, or Sherm too. Fuck 21 and all their…..air-force colonels'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Hemingway and signed ('E Hemingway') by him in the upper left corner above the printed emblem and name of the Gritti Palace Hotel. A letter of rich content written in the year that the writer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. VGLeonard Lyons (1906-1976) American newspaper columnist for the New York Post where his columns, The Lyons Den, became a New York institution covering theatre, movies, politics and art. In January 1954 Ernest and Mary Hemingway were on safari in Africa when the novelist chartered a sightseeing flight over the Belgian Congo as a Christmas present to his wife. The plane made an emergency landing and a report printed in the New York Times at the end of January declared the cause of the crash in the blue and silver single-engine Cessna to have been a result of the pilot having to dive at low altitude to avoid hitting a flying flock of ibises - jungle birds large enough to smash the canopy of the aircraft. The article continued 'Mr. Hemingway said that to miss the ibises the plane had to land either on a sandpit where six crocodiles lay basking in the sun or on an elephant track through thick scrub. Mr. Marsh chose the scrub and landed the plane with minor damage. They spent Saturday night around a camp fire surrounded by the elephant herd and caught a ride yesterday morning in a launch filled with tourists back to Butiaba on Lake Albert. When the second plane ground-looped and caught fire Mr. Hemingway said he butted open the rear door and scrambled out. His wife and the pilot also escaped, but all their luggage was destroyed. Even when the first crash stranded them overnight in the jungle, Mr. Hemingway said he was not worried. "We had emergency goods, but were short on water," he said. "We took turns going to the river, but the elephants were very stuffy about it. There were a lot of hippos and crocs wandering around the river bank."'Hemingway's two plane crashes had brought about worldwide press coverage, including reports of his death, and whilst spending two weeks recuperating the writer read his erroneous obituaries. Hemingway's biographer, James Mellow, wrote that the novelist 'had coveted the Nobel Prize', which he received in October 1954, but that 'there must have been a lingering suspicion in Hemingway's mind that his obituary notices had played a part in the academy's decision'. Still suffering from pain from the African accidents, Hemingway decided against travelling to Stockholm to be presented with the Nobel Prize.

FLAUBERT GUSTAVE: (1821-1880) French novelist. A significant autograph manuscript, unsigned, three pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1857), in French. Flaubert's extensive manuscript notes are entitled Un repas de noces - Lettre d'Hyppolochus a Lincée('A wedding meal - Letter from Hyppolochus to Lincée') and were prepared by the novelist as research notes for chapter one ('The Feast') of his historical novel Salammbo. The text states, in part, (translated) 'Caranus making a nuptial feast in Macedonia invited twenty parasites there. As soon as they were seated at table each of them was given a bottle of silver. They had each received before entering the room a gold band estimated at five gold Ecus….. For us happy for the rest of our days, with what we took from the feast of Caranus, we seek goods, country houses, slaves to buy, with the presents with which he has showered us'. Rare in this form. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG   Hippolochus was a Macedonian writer and student of Theophrastus, who addressed in a letter to his fellow student Lynceus of Samos a description of a wedding feast in Macedon in the early 3rd century BC. The bridegroom was a certain Caranus, most likely a relative of the Caranus who had been a companion of Alexander the Great.  Flaubert's Salammbo is a historical novel which was published in 1862. Enormously popular in its day, the novel opens with a feast to celebrate the victory of the battle of Eryx, won against Rome, and was praised for its style and story. Provenance: It is believed that the present manuscript was originally included with a series of other research notes made by Flaubert, totaling some 26 pages, and entitled Letters of Alciphron. As well as including extracts relating to a wedding feast, the manuscript also featured observations relating to courtesans and the manners of the people of Greece (see Les Amis de Flaubert, bulletin 12, 1958).

Twain informs his wife of preparations to their home in anticipation of the arrival of former President Grant to Hartford –‘O, we’re going to be decorated sufficient, don’t you worry about that, Madam’  TWAIN MARK: (1835-1910) Samuel Langhorne Clemens. American writer and humourist. A fine, long A.L.S., Samuel, eight pages, 8vo, 'Study' [Hartford, Connecticut], n.d. ('Tuesday. P.M.', October 1880), to his wife, Olivia. Twain commences his letter in German, stating that he arrived at 7.15pm and continuing to inform his wife of the preparations being made at their house, 'Georg hat alles gethan wie du hast es befordert. - Also - eferydings else ist all und ganz gut gemacht' (Translation: 'George did everything as you requested. The hall carpets are lifted, the doors of the women's room and your bedroom are locked, the furniture is……removed. Oh no, I wasn't telling the truth: he didn't nail the cloth in front of the sideboard - Also - eferydings else is all very well done'), completing the remainder of the letter in English, writing, in part, 'I found Mr. Beals hard at work in the rain, with his decorations. With a ladder he had strung flags around our bedroom balcony & thence around to the porte cochere, which was elaborately flagged - thence all the flags of all nations were suspended from a line which stretched past the green house to the limit of our ground. Against each of the two trees on the mound half-way down to our gate stands a knight in complete armour. Piles of still bundled flags clutter up the ombra (to be put up) also gaudy shields of various shapes (arms of this & other countries); also some huge glittering arches & things, done in gold & silver paper, containing mottoes in big letters. I broke Mr. Beal's heart by persistently & inflexibly annulling & forbidding the biggest & gorgeousest of the arches - it had on it, in all the fines of the rainbow, “The Home of Mark Twain” in letters as big as your head. O, we're going to be decorated sufficient, don't you worry about that, Madam. At least I infer so, from what I have seen of Mr. Beals's hand & what he holds in reserve. I don't know but he is really going to decorate us too much. However, I'm letting him go on…..But wasn't it lucky that I arrived in time to bust up that Mark Twain business? I'm in the study…..& I've got a cheerful wood fire & four gas burners going…..It would be perfect if you were here to help me enjoy it, sweetheart….I hope you are reading & not half as lonesome as you were expecting to be' and concluding by referring to an important principle in the play of the cards during Bridge, 'I've been puzzling over it, and - but you better ask Whitmore, because I want to be certain about it - is it always second hand low, even when you haven't got a high card? - & if you do, what do you infer from it? Or do you infer at all, in that case? It being your partners turn to infer, likely. I wish I had brought the book along; several of those things are not clear to me'. Twain signs off the letter in an affectionate manner, 'Acres of love to you, my best & dearest, & love also to the kids, including Jean', and in a postscript returns to the decoration of their home, 'P.S. I'm going to get Mr. Beals to change that to God Bless Our Home. He said he would have to have a new motto; so that will do first rate for a novelty. It is to go over the front gate'. A letter of excellent content providing a superb glimpse of Mark Twain in his intimacy. VGOlivia Langdon Clemens (1845-1904) Wife of Samuel Langhorne Clemens from 1870. Livy, as she was known, assisted her husband with the editing of his books, articles and lectures and Twain once wrote of her “I am as proud of her brain as her beauty”. The couple had three daughters, including Jean who had been born in July 1880.The extensive decorations to their home which Twain makes reference to in the present letter were in preparation of the visit of former United States President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) to Hartford on 16th October 1880. Grant was seeking the Republican presidential nomination for a third term and upon his train arriving in Hartford he found that 'the city was thronged with visitors…..and the streets were lined with decorations, not only along the line of march of the procession, but elsewhere'. Twain gave a welcoming address to Grant in which the writer declared 'Your country loves you. Your country is proud of you. Your country is grateful to you. Her applauses which have been thundering in your ears all these weeks and months, will never cease while the flag you saved continues to wave. Your country stands ready from this day forth to testify her measureless love and pride and gratitude toward you in every conceivable inexpensive way. Welcome to Hartford, great soldier, honoured statesman, unselfish citizen'.
