ROBERTSTON'S ADVERTISING FIGURE:- An Edwardian child's or preserve spoon with an egg-shaped bowl and the Golly*figure terminal, by Levi & Salaman, Birmingham 1909; 5.1" (13 cms) long; 0.85 oz *This famous figure was adopted by Robertson's Preserve Manufacturers Ltd. in 1910 after a trip to the USA to set up a plant in Boston. James Robertson's son bought a Golly doll whilst he was there and for some reason the figure started to appear on their price lists and then became their trade mark. As the date letters on hallmarked silver changed each year on St.Dunstan's day, 19th May, the date letter "K" on this spoon would have been used up until May 1910. The spoon therefore must be one of the earliest examples of the trademark coming into general usage.

She first exhibited at the Salon in 1874 with a marble bust of Jeune Fille: fellah du Caire which was awarded a silver medal in 1900. In 1875 Charlotte travelled and studied in Rome thanks to her sponsors and patrons the 4th Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, where Charlotte met her husband, the artist Albert Besnard, who was director of the French Academy in Rome. She subsequently moved to London and exhibited a series of portrait busts at the RA from 1875-1878.
