G. STYLES, GARRARD & Co LTD, 2, JOHN NORRIE, 1.3oztAlex Styles was one of Britain's leading silver designers of the 20th century and spent most of his career as head designer for Garrard & Company until he retired in 1987. The Times newspaper once described him as "the finest designer of hand made silver in England".Styles is featured as one of the top 50 British silversmiths (Designer British Silver 1930-1985:, pgs 458-465) and his production runs were usually small. They made silver pieces inspired by the beautiful dinner services of the eighteenth century. Through lavish events at a number of international shows and exhibitions, Boin-Taburet contributed directly to the revival of this style.

A late 19th century Austro-Hungarian silver 12-piece dressing table set, mark of Josef Carl Klinkosch, Dianakopf 3rd standard for 800/1000 standard silver, Vienna, Double Headed Eagle marked, each piece decorated with a band of foliate engraving, comprising a wooden backed table mirror, an oval tray, a chamberstick, a hat pin cushion, 3 rectangular fluted glass containers with rounded edges and detachable friction fitting covers, 2 round fluted glass containers with detachable friction fitting covers, a double sided hand mirror and 2 urn shaped fluted glass scent bottles with ground glass stoppers, silver collars and friction fitting detachable silver covers, maximum dimensions of mirror 54 x 46cm, 31.8ozt weighable silver Josef Carl Klinkosch (1822-1888) is widely regarded as one of the finest Austrian silversmiths of the late 19th century. His clients were drawn from the upper middle classes and the elite nobility of Europe. From 1855, Klinkosch held the Imperial Warrant to Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and fulfilled numerous commissions for the Austrian Royal Family. He was knighted in 1879, after which he became known as Joseph Carl Ritter von Klinkosch. He retired in 1884 and the company passed to his two sons, Arthur and Isidor. In 1918, the company was acquired by Arthur Krupp and was incorporated under the name 'J.C. Klinkosch AG'. The company was deleted from the Commercial Register in 1972.

As a two-year-old he finished second in his debut race, the Windsor Castle Stakes, fourth in the Middle Park Stakes and won the Dewhurst Stakes. At age three, Crepello raced only twice but won two classic races; the 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby, where his winning time of 2:35.4 seconds was the fastest since 1936.Retired to stud at his owner's Eve Stud in Woodditton, Cambridgeshire, Crepello was the leading sire in Great Britain & Ireland in 1969 and the Champion Broodmare sire in 1974.Following the London & North Eastern Railway tradition of naming locomotives after winning racehorses, British Railways "Deltic" Diesel locomotive no. D9012 (later 55012) was named after the horse on 4 September 1961, and remained in service until 18 May 1981.Hoof #1 ('flatter' example) - Overall in fair to good condition with no obvious sign of repair. Silver cap loose, particularly towards the heel, with one retaining pin missing and one in place but not attached. Hallmarks and engraving clear and readable. Some cracking and deterioration to the underside of the hoof, particularly to the heel bulb and frog. Some minor audible 'rattling' when shaken.

The largest tumbler has areas of bruising to the base with small raised areas above one bruise. The tumbler engraved with 'RIGA' has a minor dent to the base on the underside and a very minor dent to the rim - see images. The campana-formed tumbler has markings and fading commensurate with age with a small marking on the exterior. The smallest tumbler has a roughness to extremities possibly through use, and slight bruising to the base and rim.

A pair of late 19th century silver plated candlesticks, mark of Elkington & Company, 1892, each loaded fluted square base with turned corners, double knopped column, fluted sconce and detachable wax pan, underside with green baize table protector, 26cm highProvenance:Ballykeel House, Hillsborough, Northern IrelandOverall in fair condition with no obvious sign of repair. Some surface scratches and minor bruising, as to be expected and commensurate with use and age. Loss to the silver plating all over, particularly on the raised areas. Some wear and deterioration to the green baize protectors to the underside. Each numbered 2756 within the well of the sconce, and signed and marked to the edge of the base. No apparent leaning and both stand firm on a flat surface with no wobble. Both with loaded bases.

A pair of early 20th century German metalwares silver plated candlesticks, circa 1900, marked WMFN for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, in the Neoclassical style, each filled square concave base decorated with swags, bows and ribbons over a textured ground, Corinthian column and acanthus capital, 12 x 12cm, 31cm high The initials 'WMFN' have been struck in italics and are accompanied by the 'Antler' mark, used around 1900. This extra mark was developed from the Wurtemburg Coat of Arms, but its meaning is not clear. It may be in commemoration of WMF's 20-year jubilee, or simply in celebration of a new century. The letter 'N' following 'WMF' represents the German word 'Neusilber', or nickel silver, the base metal material used to make the item before being silver plated. The 1/0 mark relates to the thickness of the silver plating. These series of marks are rare on WMF-made items.
