Ephemera – Aviation – Airships – The R100 a small piece of silver fabric, approx 2.5 x 2 ins, mounted to album leaf with the legend ‘Aeroplane cloth from R100’. The R100 was conceived and designed by Barnes-Wallis and was relatively successful, crossing the Atlantic in 78 hours, and returning in 58 hours. The R101 disaster however, led the government to ban all flights by the R100 and it was eventually scrapped. Thus this may be one of the few surviving pieces from one of the landmarks of British aviation.
Ephemera – Royalty – Earl Mountbatten of Burma a metal cigarette case (probably silver but not hallmarked), bearing badge of Earl Mountbatten to top, and containing a snapshot photograph showing him announcing the Japanese Surrender in Rangoon. The case is approx 12x9 cms. This is accompanied by a letter written on behalf of Prince Charles dated March 24th 2011 saying that he was delighted his correspondent had acquired the case and a further letter written on behalf of the Queen in June 2011 saying that she had taken careful note of her correspondent’s comments regarding the case ‘which formerly belonged to Lord Mountbatten of Burma, which is now in your possession ...’. Together with a commemorative medallion in nickel silver issued on the death of Earl Mountbatten in 1979, and two FDCs commemorating him.
